Cardiac consequences of inter itermittent hypoxia: a matter of dose? A systematic review and meta-analysis in rodents

Elise Belaidi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis demonstrates that intermittent hypoxia exposure systematically induces cardiac remodelling and contractile dysfunction in rodents, which might trigger or aggravate chronic heart failure. Interestingly, depending on the severity of the stimulus, intermittent hypoxia exhibits both protective and aggravating effects on infarct size after experimental ischemia-reperfusion procedures.

Adiponectin ameliorates lung injury induced by intermittent hypoxia through inhibition of ROS-associated pulmonary cell apoptosis

Wenxiao Ding et al.

Summary: Although CIH did not cause abnormal lung function or pulmonary hypertension, early lung injury was detected at the molecular level in rats exposed to CIH. Treatment with Ad ameliorated the pulmonary injury by activating the SIRT3/SOD2 pathway, reducing ROS generation, and inhibiting ROS-associated lung cell apoptosis.

Molecular Signaling to Preserve Mitochondrial Integrity against Ischemic Stress in the Heart: Rescue or Remove Mitochondria in Danger

Justin D. Yu et al.

Summary: Ischemic heart disease is a common cause of heart failure and leads to loss of cardiomyocytes; protective signaling pathways are activated under stress conditions to protect mitochondria; damaged mitochondria are removed through mitophagy to prevent mitochondrial deterioration.

Mitochondria-associated membrane-modulated Ca2+ transfer: A potential treatment target in cardiac ischemia reperfusion injury and heart failure

Yingchao Gong et al.

Summary: The mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of cardiac ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) and heart failure. Restoring and maintaining the physiological contact between mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) may improve mitochondrial function, inhibit cell death, and alleviate heart injury and disease development.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Yerem Yeghiazarians et al.

Summary: Obstructive sleep apnea is common among middle-aged and older adults and often underrecognized, especially in patients with heart disease. Screening and treatment for sleep-disordered breathing should be considered for cardiac patients, with follow-up sleep testing to assess treatment effectiveness.
