Phoenicin Switch: Discovering the Trigger for Radical Phoenicin Production in Multiple Wild-Type Penicillium Species

Johan Vormsborg Christiansen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the production of fungal quinones in wild-type strains for use as electrolytes in redox flow batteries. As society converts energy production in a more sustainable direction, it becomes increasingly more important to store sustainable energy in smart ways. Conventional battery technologies imply the use of highly toxic, expensive, and rare metals; thus, quinone redox flow batteries have been proposed to be a desirable alternative. In this study, we explored the possibility of producing the fungal quinone phoenicin in Penicillium spp. by changing the growth parameters. The production of other secondary metabolites and known mycotoxins was also investigated in a metabolomics study. It was shown that phoenicin production was activated by optimizing the carbon concentration of the medium, resulting in high titers and purity of the single metabolite.

Summary: Quinones are highly structurally diverse secondary metabolites found in filamentous fungi, with important biological functions such as inhibition of bacteria and protection against sunlight exposure. The prospect of producing quinones via fungal cultivation in industrially scaled bioreactors poses great opportunities for producing valuable metabolites.

Bioactive Ascochlorin Analogues from the Marine-Derived Fungus Stilbella fimetaria

Karolina Subko et al.

Summary: The marine-derived fungus Stilbella fimetaria produces bioactive metabolites, including meroterpenoids of the ascochlorin family. Testing revealed that analogues with a 5-chloroorcylaldehyde moiety are more effective against microbes compared to the benzoquinone analogues.

Production and Selectivity of Key Fusarubins from Fusarium solani due to Media Composition

Sebastian Birkedal Kristensen et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of carbohydrates and nitrogen sources on the production and selectivity of four different polyketides produced by Fusarium solani was investigated. Different combinations of carbohydrates and nitrogen sources showed varying effects on production yields and selectivity. Maximum yields did not necessarily correlate with high selectivity, which is important for easier purification steps.
