Towards a predictive simulation of brace action in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Claudio Vergari et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the clinical relevance of a predictive and subject-specific model for bracing treatment in AIS patients, finding that the model could reproduce brace action and spinal adjustments in patients. While there is room for improvement, the approach shows promise for realistic and predictive simulation of brace treatment.

An automatic method for feature segmentation of human thoracic and lumbar vertebrae

Luca Di Angelo et al.

Summary: A new automatic method for feature segmentation and recognition of human vertebrae is proposed in this study, which has been proven to be robust and reliable in the segmentation and recognition of morphological features of vertebrae through analysis and comparison with traditional manual methods. This automatic method avoids the blurring of quantitative parameters obtained from vertebrae, resulting from poor repeatability and reproducibility of manual methods.

Automatic detection and segmentation of lumbar vertebrae from X-ray images for compression fracture evaluation

Kang Cheol Kim et al.

Summary: An automatic X-ray image segmentation technique combining deep-learning and level-set methods is proposed for compression fracture detection and evaluation. This structured hierarchical segmentation method utilizes pose-driven learning and M-net to accurately identify lumbar vertebrae and segment individual vertebrae. Fine tuning segmentation is achieved by combining the level-set method with the obtained segmentation results, resulting in accurate and robust identification of each lumbar vertebra.

Modeling of Personalized Anatomy Using Plastic Strains

Bohan Wang et al.

Summary: The method presented in the study successfully models shapes undergoing large and/or anisotropic strains using plastic strains and the finite element method, with sparse point constraints on the object's boundary. Compared to standard methods, the proposed method avoids spikiness, wiggliness, and other artifacts in shape deformation.

Incidence and Surgery Rate of Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Nationwide Database Study

Sahyun Sung et al.

Summary: Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common cause of three-dimensional deformities of the spine. A population-based study from 2011 to 2015 identified an overall incidence rate of 0.497%, with females having a 1.44 times higher incidence than males. The highest incidence was seen in patients aged 10-14 years, with urban populations having higher incidences than rural populations. Surgical treatment was undergone by 0.7% of diagnosed patients within five years. Understanding the epidemiology of idiopathic scoliosis is crucial for identifying high-risk patients and monitoring surgical interventions.

Intervariability in radiographic parameters and general evaluation of a low-dose fluoroscopic technique in patients with idiopathic scoliosis

Christian Wong et al.

Summary: By comparing low-dose fluoroscopic technique (LFT) with ordinary radiographic technique (ORT) in imaging of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, it was found that LFT had higher noise and contrast, but similar signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio. LFT proved to be reliable for Cobb's angle measurements and significantly reduced radiation dose.
