Reversing fatigue in carbon-fiber reinforced vitrimer composites

Mithil Kamble et al.

Summary: Most current approaches to combating fatigue in carbon-fiber reinforced polymeric composites are unable to reverse the fatigue process. This study introduces a vitrimeric system that can repeatedly reverse fatigue damage by heating the material above its topology freezing transition temperature. This innovation allows for intermittent healing of fatigue-induced damage, postponing fatigue failure indefinitely.

Interlaminar shear fracture healing of thermoset CFRP composite using multiphase thermoplastic healing agents

Bodiuzzaman Jony et al.

Summary: The study presents the recovery of shear fracture toughness of damaged thermoset carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite using multiphase thermoplastic healing agents. Bio-mimetic heat-activated intrinsic healing and molten thermoplastic PCL healants were employed to repair micro or macro cracks, achieving recovery of fracture toughness in fractured specimens.

Interlaminar fracture and crack-healing capability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites toughened with 3D-printed poly-ε-caprolactone grid structures

Bertan Beylergil

Summary: In this study, carbon fiber/epoxy composites were toughened using 3D-printed PCL grid structures, enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal healing efficiency of the composites. The addition of PCL interlayers significantly improved the Mode-I fracture toughness, but also led to a decrease in flexural properties. The results provide insights into the relationship between the amount of PCL and the enhancement of performance in these composites.
