Characterization and cytotoxic activity of pigment extracted fromRhodotorula mucilaginosato assess its potential as bio-functional additive in confectionary products

Rajan Sharma et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify and characterize the pigment produced by yeast strainRhodotorula mucilaginosa(MTCC-1403) using food industry residues, measure its anti-carcinogenic activity, and evaluate its influence on confectionary products. UV-visible spectroscopic analysis revealed major carotenoids present, while significant impact on antioxidant activity, carotenoid content, color profile, and sensory evaluation of the confectionery products was observed.

Microbial lipid production from crude glycerol and hemicellulosic hydrolysate with oleaginous yeasts

Mikolaj Chmielarz et al.

Summary: This study tested the ability of oleaginous yeasts to utilize crude glycerol and hemicellulose hydrolysate as carbon sources, finding that only a few strains were able to convert them into microbial lipids. Mixing crude glycerol and hemicellulose hydrolysate stimulated lipid accumulation in R. toruloides and R. glutinis, resulting in a shorter fermentation time to reach maximum lipid concentration.

Newly designed antimicrobial peptides with potent bioactivity and enhanced cell selectivity prevent and reverse rifampin resistance in Gram-negative bacteria

Ningyi Zhu et al.

Summary: Newly designed peptides with excellent bioactivity, modest cell toxicity, low resistance tendency, and moderate stability have been developed through amino acid substitution and peptide truncation. These peptides demonstrate synergy or additive effects against Gram-negative bacteria when combined with conventional antibiotics, showing promise as antibiotic alternatives to tackle the risk of drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.
