The Chemical Compositions, and Antibacterial and Antioxidant Activities of Four Types of Citrus Essential Oils

Xiaocai Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of essential oils extracted from various citrus fruits. Monoterpene hydrocarbons, particularly limonene, were found to be the major components in all citrus essential oils. The results showed that kumquat essential oil exhibited the best inhibitory effect against certain bacteria, while Nanfeng mandarin essential oil had the highest antioxidant activity. Additionally, the antibacterial activities of the essential oils did not seem to be correlated with their antioxidant activities.

Intercultivar Diversity of Sour Orange (Citrus aurantium L.) Based on Genetic Markers, Phenotypic Characteristics, Aromatic Compounds and Sensorial Analysis

Vincent Ferrer et al.

Summary: Through evaluation of 45 sour orange accessions from the INRAE-CIRAD citrus Biological Resources Center in France, it was found that there is low molecular polymorphism among sour oranges, with some genotypes originating from hybridizations involving sour orange, citron, pummelo or mandarin. The peel essential oil diversity is low, mainly composed of limonene, which correlates with genetic diversity. Compounds in the leaf essential oil show significant differences across sour orange varieties.

Chemical Composition, In Vitro and In Silico Antioxidant Potential of Melissa officinalis subsp. officinalis Essential Oil

Matilda Radulescu et al.

Summary: The study showed that Melissa officinalis subsp. officinalis essential oil (MOEO) has good antioxidant activity, which can be maintained through free radical scavenging and inhibition of hydroperoxides. Major components include beta-cubebene, beta-caryophyllene, and alpha-cadinene. Molecular docking analysis indicated that MOEO components can exert antioxidant activity by inhibiting xanthine oxidoreductase.
