Flocculation behaviors of a novel papermaking sludge-based flocculant in practical printing and dyeing wastewater treatment

Kangying Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a papermaking sludge-based flocculant (PSBF) was compared to polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) for practical printing and dyeing wastewater (PPDW) treatment. PSBF showed better performance than PAC at a pH higher than 7.0, and when used in combination with PAC, it enhanced removal efficiencies of color, CODCr and turbidity in PPDW treatment.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron/cobalt@mesoporous hydrated silica core-shell particles as a highly active heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A

Minghui Xiang et al.

Summary: In this study, novel nanoscale zero-valent iron/cobalt@mesoporous hydrated silica core-shell particles were synthesized for the rapid degradation of Tetrabromobisphenol A. By optimizing the catalyst ratio and reaction conditions, the particles exhibited excellent reactivity and mineralization activity for TBBPA removal.

Development and validation of a cleaner production measurement scale

Thyago de Melo Duarte Borges et al.

Summary: Cleaner Production (CP) is a continuous application of integrated environmental strategies to increase production efficiency and reduce risks to the environment and people. This study proposes a scale with eight constructs and twenty-five practices to measure the level of CP adoption, which was validated in terms of reliability and validity. The scale can be used as a benchmarking tool for companies and industry sectors, as well as by public policy managers to improve environmental regulations.

Occurrence, fates, and carcinogenic risks of substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in two coking wastewater treatment systems

Ayman N. Saber et al.

Summary: This study reports the occurrence, fates, and carcinogenic risks of SPAHs and PAHs in two coking wastewater treatment plants, revealing that biological treatment processes effectively remove MPAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs. Transformation and adsorption were identified as major mechanisms for removing different types of PAHs and SPAHs. Concerns were raised over the relatively high concentrations of SPAHs in excess sludge and treated effluent, as well as the potential lung cancer risks posed by the presence of SPAHs in the ambient air.

Tetrabromobisphenol A induced reproductive endocrine-disrupting effects in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis

Shuang Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reproductive endocrine-disrupting effects of TBBPA on mussels, showing that TBBPA treatment promotes gametogenesis and alters vertebrate sex hormone levels in mussels, while also affecting the transcription levels of SULT1E1 and STS. These findings provide new insights into assessing the impact of TBBPA and monitoring TBBPA in the marine environment.

Effect of Fe3+ on the sludge properties and microbial community structure in a lab-scale A2O process

Lanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that an appropriate concentration of Fe3+ can enhance the removal efficiencies of COD and TN in wastewater treatment, while excessive concentration may lead to inhibition. Furthermore, the positive correlation between Fe3+ concentration and TP removal was attributed to the increased surface roughness for enhanced phosphorus adsorption onto activated sludge. Thauera was identified as the dominant bacterial genus, and certain bacteria showed good adaptability to high concentration of Fe3+ within the bacterial community. Gene families related to Carbohydrate Metabolism, Amino Acid Metabolism, Cell Motility, Membrane Transport, and Replication and Repair were found to be the most abundant functional genes in the metabolic pathways.

Influence of the co-exposure of microplastics and tetrabromobisphenol A on human gut: Simulation in vitro with human cell Caco-2 and gut microbiota

Wantang Huang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that both PEMPs and TBBPA have detrimental effects on Caco-2 cells, with TBBPA playing a major role and high concentrations of PEMPs also affecting cell viability. TBBPA selectively inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria, leading to shifts in microbiota composition that are unfavorable for gut health. The interference of PEMPs and TBBPA also alters metabolism pathways of gut microbiota, highlighting the potential threat to human health.

Thanh Huy Phung et al.

Summary: This study introduces a hybrid fabrication process for LED matrix on flexible multilayer printed circuit boards, utilizing roll-to-roll screen printing to create a core circuit board. By laminating and etching processes, the core PCB is transformed into four layers in total, enabling the implementation of passive LED matrix display. This method can be applied to other applications requiring flexible and multilayer circuits.
