The nutritional quality of food parcels provided by food banks and the effectiveness of food banks at reducing food insecurity in developed countries: a mixed-method systematic review

Lucy Oldroyd et al.

Summary: Food parcels provided by food banks are not nutritionally adequate and often fail to meet individual needs. However, using food banks can improve food security and dietary quality of users. Limited variety, quality, and choice of food explain the persistence of food insecurity. Efforts to ensure consistent and adequate nutrition at food banks, including catering for individual needs, are recommended.

Food insecurity and patterns of dietary intake in a sample of UK adults

Jackie Shinwell et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the dietary intake correlates of food insecurity in UK adults. The findings showed that food insecure participants had a less diverse diet with fewer distinct foods per meal, and more variable time gaps between meals. These associations were consistent with a recent US study, highlighting the importance of temporal irregularity in dietary intake as a component of food insecurity.

Can low-income households afford a healthy diet? Insufficient income as a driver of food insecurity in Europe

Tess Penne et al.

Summary: Food insecurity remains a serious concern in Europe, with policies focusing on food aid and nutritional education while overlooking the barrier of insufficient income. New evidence reveals that inadequate income and minimum income policies are key challenges in accessing a healthy diet in many European countries. Efforts to address food insecurity should be integrated into broader economic and social policies promoting adequate income for all.

Examining Sociodemographic Factors, Food Insecurity and Obesity of Food Pantry Clients in Alaska: A Cross Sectional Study

Amanda Walch et al.

Summary: Despite high rates of food insecurity among Alaska food pantry clients, there was no significant association found between weight and food security status in this study. The majority of clients were over 45 years old, working part-time, and earning less than $25,000 per year. The research sheds light on the demographic, food security, and weight status of pantry clients, providing insights for addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity and obesity.

Summary: Globalization is changing food environments in low- and middle-income countries, but most assessments are developed for high-income countries, not suitable for diverse LMIC contexts. Market availability, accessibility, price, and affordability are crucial dimensions, with market-basket analysis and vendor audits being the most suitable methods for assessment.

The association of household and child food insecurity with overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in an urban setting of Ethiopia

Sibhatu Biadgilign et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify distinct neighborhood profiles in New York City and found that living in Low SES/High Activity neighborhoods was associated with lower BMI and slower increase in BMI compared to High Disadvantage profiles. Life stories of food agency, health, and resilience in a rapidly gentrifying urban centre: Building a multidimensional concept of food access

Vanessa Ong et al.

Summary: This qualitative study delves into the relationship between food access, food security, health, and gentrification in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, revealing the complex decision-making processes of residents in procuring healthy, affordable, and appropriate foods, as well as the disproportionate effects of gentrification on racialized residents. The findings showcase how individuals creatively cope with and adapt to changes in their food environments, expanding food access research and emphasizing the importance of understanding diverse priorities, adaptation strategies, motivations, and behaviors related to food procurement within the context of structural barriers to food security. Supporting residents' food agency and food justice in gentrifying cities may lead to more effective interventions to support food security and health.
