Numerical analysis of unsteady aerodynamic performance of floating offshore wind turbine under platform surge and pitch motions

Ziwen Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of floating offshore wind turbines under different motions using computational fluid dynamics simulations. It is found that increasing amplitude and frequency can aggravate the fluctuation of the overall aerodynamic performance of wind turbines. Additionally, complex platform motions adversely affect the power generation of floating offshore wind turbines.

Modelling wave growth in narrow fetch geometries: The white-capping and wind input formulations

Konstantinos Christakos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of three different wave model source term packages in narrow fetch geometries, with the results indicating that the saturation-based approach of SWAN performs best in fjord systems. ST6 shows the highest sensitivity to fetch geometry and local wind changes, with all packages overestimating wave energy in narrow fetch geometry without swell.

A global assessment of extreme wind speeds for wind energy applications

Sara C. Pryor et al.

Summary: This study presents a global investigation of extreme wind speeds using different statistical approaches, providing robust estimates of wind resource for cost-effective expansion of the wind energy industry. The study shows that estimates of U-50 derived from ERA5 output using four different methods are within an average of 9-13% of those from point measurements. The reference wind speed (U-ref) derived from wind turbine design standards is generally a conservative estimate of U-50 and may lead to over-engineering of wind turbines and excess capital expenditures, especially after applying additional safety factors.

Enabling conditions for an equitable and sustainable blue economy

Andres M. Cisneros-Montemayor et al.

Summary: The future of the global ocean economy is envisioned as advancing towards a 'blue economy' which emphasizes socially equitable, environmentally sustainable, and economically viable ocean industries. Differences in outlook on the capacity for establishing a blue economy exist, with key factors including national stability, corruption, and infrastructure. Policymakers must engage researchers and stakeholders to ensure evidence-based, collaborative planning that prioritizes local benefits and aligns with social, environmental, and economic goals.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Experimental and numerical study of a semi-submersible offshore fish farm under waves

Yu-ji Miao et al.

Summary: The interaction between the semi-submersible offshore fish farm (SOFF) and waves was investigated through numerical simulations and model tests. The study found that key parameters such as draft, wave height, and net solidity ratio have significant effects on the motion responses of the SOFF. The results showed that draft influences heave and pitch motion, wave amplitude is positively correlated with response amplitudes, and changes in net solidity ratio affect heave and pitch motion.

Offshore wind turbine operations and maintenance: A state-of-the-art review

Zhengru Ren et al.

Summary: Operations and maintenance of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) are essential for the development of offshore wind farms. Maintenance, in particular, plays a crucial role in the overall cost of energy due to practical constraints and high costs associated with offshore operations. The impact of maintenance on the life cycle of offshore wind farms is complex and uncertain, with maintenance strategies significantly affecting efficiency, profitability, safety, and sustainability. Onsite maintenance involves intricate marine operations that rely on practical factors for efficiency and safety, while potential negative environmental impacts also need to be considered.

Stabilization of power output and platform motion of a floating offshore wind turbine-generator system using model predictive control based on previewed disturbances

Tetsuya Wakui et al.

Summary: The model predictive control strategy is developed for a floating offshore wind turbine-generator system to stabilize power output and platform motion, and reduce dynamic loads at mechanical and supporting components in high wind speeds. Through aero-elastic-hydro-control coupled simulations, it is shown that the identified internal model has high prediction accuracy of system outputs and achieves stabilization of power output and platform motion under turbulent wind fields and irregular wave height variations.
