Monoterpenes: current knowledge on food source, metabolism, and health effects

Jose Fernando Rinaldi de Alvarenga et al.

Summary: Monoterpenes, volatile metabolites produced by plants, have various biological activities including antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have shown that monoterpenes can also regulate energy metabolism and have potential benefits in diabetes, obesity, and gut microbiota modulation. However, the lack of reliable quantification methods hinders the investigation of their role in food.

Technological and Biotechnological Processes To Enhance the Bioavailability of Dietary (Poly)phenols in Humans

Franck Polia et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of (poly)phenols is generally low and shows high interindividual variability due to their low water solubility, presence in foods as polymers or in glycosylated forms, and tight bond to food matrices. Limited information exists on how technological and biotechnological processes affect the bioavailability of (poly)phenols in humans. Various methods such as food processing, oral-delivery nanoformulations, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, co-administration with probiotics, and generation of postbiotics have been overviewed in terms of their effects on (poly)phenol bioavailability in humans.

Revisiting the role of melatonin in human melanocyte physiology: A skin context perspective

Alec Sevilla et al.

Summary: Melatonin, an evolutionarily ancient compound, plays a crucial role in regulating melanogenesis, oxidative biology, mitochondrial function, and pigmentation-related clock gene activity in human skin. It inhibits melanogenesis and melanocyte proliferation by stimulating melatonin membrane receptors, while also providing cyto- and senescence-protective and antioxidative effects in melanocytes. Research suggests the importance of studying melatonin's effects on melanocytes in a physiological tissue context and further exploring its impact on human epidermis and hair follicles.

In vitro activity of essential oils against microbial isolates from otitis externa cases in dogs

Manuel Gomez-Garcia et al.

Summary: The study found that cinnamaldehyde exhibited the highest bactericidal and fungicidal activity among the tested compounds against clinical isolates recovered from canine otitis externa cases. Bacterial isolates showed lower susceptibility to essential oils compared to fungal isolates, with a more evident difference for Gram-positive bacteria. No relationship between antibiotic multi-resistant profile and susceptibility to compounds was observed.

Intestinal Microbiota Mediates Gossypol-Induced Intestinal Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Apoptosis in Fish

Wei-Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of gossypol on Nile tilapia and found that it reduced the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota. Gossypol down-regulated the expression of most metabolites, and riboflavin was the key metabolite with significant difference between the control and gossypol-treated groups. Fecal bacteria transplantation experiments demonstrated that the negative effects of gossypol were mediated by the intestinal microbiota and its metabolite.
