Phylogenetic Network of Mitochondrial COI Gene Sequences Distinguishes 10 Taxa Within the Neotropical Albitarsis Group (Diptera: Culicidae), Confirming the Separate Species Status of Anopheles albitarsis H (Diptera: Culicidae) and Revealing a Novel Lineage, Anopheles albitarsis J

Maysa T. Motoki et al.

Summary: The Neotropical Albitarsis Group is a complex assemblage of essentially isomorphic species with eight recognized species defined through mitochondrial DNA analysis. An.deaneorum showed the highest intra-specific nucleotide diversity, while An.marajoara displayed the lowest. Significant correlation between genetic and geographical distance was observed only in An.oryzalimnetes and An.albitarsis F. Divergence time within the group was estimated at 0.58-2.25 Mya.

Widespread zoophagy and detection of Plasmodium spp. in Anopheles mosquitoes in southeastern Madagascar

Micaela Finney et al.

Summary: In southeastern Madagascar, Anopheles mosquitoes primarily feed on livestock, especially cattle and swine, with a small percentage feeding on poultry and humans. Plasmodium screening of 1607 Anopheles mosquitoes revealed a high prevalence of P. vivax 247, followed by P. vivax 210 and P. falciparum. Evidence of P. vivax and P. falciparum coinfection in Anopheles mosquitoes was found.

Anopheles drivers of persisting malaria transmission in Guna Yala, Panama: an operational investigation

Mario Avila et al.

Summary: Government-led entomological surveillance in the Guna Yala region of Panama identified gaps in protection, insecticide resistance, and behavioral patterns of Anopheles vectors that contribute to persisting malaria transmission. These findings underscore the importance of continued and targeted entomological surveillance to inform malaria control strategies.

New Records of Anopheles benarrochi B (Diptera: Culicidae) in Malaria Hotspots in the Amazon Regions of Ecuador and Peru

Diego Morales Viteri et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the presence of An. benarrochi B in Ecuador and reported it for the first time in the Amazonian provinces of Orellana and Morona Santiago. Additionally, the species collected in the Andoas District in Datem del Maranon Province, Peru, was identified as An. benarrochi B and noted for its high anthropophilic behavior. The known distribution of An. benarrochi B has been expanded to include southern Colombia, much of Peru, and eastern Ecuador.

Malaria risk stratification in Colombia 2010 to 2019

Julio Cesar Padilla-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: In Colombia, 91.2% of the territory is receptive to malaria transmission and is characterized by being both heterogeneous and focused. Stratum 4 contains the greatest burden of disease, primarily concentrated in the Pacific and Uraba-Bajo Cauca-Sinu-San Jorge regions. Most receptive municipalities have a predominance of Plasmodium vivax, except for in the Pacific region where Plasmodium falciparum is more prevalent. Anopheles albimanus, An. nuneztovari s.l., and An. darlingi were identified as the main vectors in receptive areas.

DNA identification of species of the Anopheles maculipennis complex and first record of An. daciae in Belgium

N. Smitz et al.

Summary: This study identified the members of the Anopheles maculipennis complex in Belgium through DNA sequencing and PCR-RFLP assays, with An. maculipennis and An. daciae being the two most prevalent species. The findings contribute to the understanding of the distribution and species composition of these malaria vectors in Belgium.

Larval habitat diversity and Anopheles mosquito species distribution in different ecological zones in Ghana

Isaac A. Hinne et al.

Summary: This study in rural communities in Ghana found that dug-out wells in the coastal savannah and forest zones, and furrows from irrigated canals in the Sahel savannah zone were the most productive breeding habitats for Anopheles mosquitoes. The increased abundance in the rainy season was one of the reasons for more larvae.

Natural malaria infection in anophelines vectors and their incrimination in local malaria transmission in Darien, Panama

Rolando Torres-Cosme et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the malaria transmission dynamics in Darien, Panama by capturing mosquitoes to detect the composition of Anopheles species and their natural infection rate. The research identified An. (Nys.) darlingi and An. (Nys.) albimanus as dominant species, with some mosquitoes found to be infected with P. vivax.

Modeling the Potential Distribution of the Malaria Vector Anopheles (Ano.) pseudopunctipennis Theobald (Diptera: Culicidae) in Arid Regions of Northern Chile

Lara Valderrama et al.

Summary: The extreme north of Chile has a subtropical climate that is permissive for disease vectors, such as Anopheles pseudopunctipennis, a main malaria vector in Latin America. Although malaria has been eradicated in Chile since 1945, the vector persists in river ravines of the Arica and Tarapaca regions. Climate change in the region is mainly characterized by temperature increase, and accurate precipitation prediction is challenging due to historical data irregularities. This study aims to estimate the distribution pattern of An. pseudopunctipennis in Chile under current and projected climate scenarios, providing valuable information for vector control and surveillance programs in Latin America.

Gene flow between island populations of the malaria mosquito, Anopheles hinesorum, may have contributed to the spread of divergent host preference phenotypes

Luke Ambrose et al.

Summary: Anopheles hinesorum is a mosquito species with variable host preference, showing both anthropophagic and zoophagic behaviors in different populations. Recent studies have found divergent mitochondrial lineages in the Solomon Archipelago and suggested the possibility of independent evolution of zoophagy. Additionally, there is evidence of recent migration from New Guinea to the Solomon Islands, potentially introducing anthropophagic traits to the local mosquito population.

Summary: This study compared a PCR method targeting the Plasmodium mt COX-I gene with CSP ELISA for identifying different life stages of the parasite in mosquitoes. The PCR method was found to be more sensitive and detected a higher percentage of infected mosquitoes compared to ELISA.

Prevalence of sibling-species of Anopheles (Cellia) fluviatilis complex in Himachal Pradesh, India

Taru Singh et al.

Summary: The study in Kangra district, India, revealed that Anopheles fluviatilis sibling-species U is predominant followed by species T, and both are non-vectors for malaria transmission. Absence of malaria parasite and zoophagic nature of An. fluviatilis confirmed that both U and T are non-vector sibling-species.
