Complex in situ stress states in a deep shale gas reservoir in the southern Sichuan Basin, China: From field stress measurements to in situ stress modeling

Rui Yong et al.

Summary: This study established a 3D in situ stress model of the Longmaxi shale gas formation in the southern Sichuan Basin through field in situ stress measurements, revealing a complex stress state. The presence of faults was found to alter both the magnitudes and orientations of in situ stress, leading to higher risk of slipping in certain faults.

Effects of lacustrine hydrothermal activity on the organic matter input of source rocks during the Yanchang period in the Ordos Basin

Liming Ji et al.

Summary: The study revealed the impact of lacustrine hydrothermal activities on the formation of excellent source rocks in the Ordos Basin during the Middle and Late Triassic Yanchang period. The results showed that hydrothermal activity may have induced algae and source rock formation, contributing to the development of excellent source rocks. The close relationship between hydrothermal activity and sulfur content may have created a reducing environment beneficial for the preservation of organic matter and the deposition of high-quality source rocks.

The Effective Stress Coefficient of Coal: A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation

Adelina Lv et al.

Summary: The effective stress coefficient (ESC) is a key parameter in the linear poroelastic effective stress formulation, and sonic velocity measurements are widely used to estimate the ESC. However, the structure of coal has inherent differences to other porous rocks, which affects its behavior in hydromechanical experiments.

Occurrence of fluids in high dip angled coal measures: Geological and geochemical assessments for southern Junggar Basin, China

Shuling Tang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that high dip angle significantly affects the fluid pressure, in situ stress, permeability, and gas bearing capacity of CBM reservoirs. The self-sealing property of high dip CBM reservoirs can prevent gas escaping, and the high dip angle formation results in pressure differentiation in CBM reservoirs.

The influence of magmatic-hydrothermal activities on porosity and permeability of sandstone reservoirs in the Linxing area, Ordos Basin, Northern China

Yong Shu et al.

Summary: The potential for natural gas exploration in the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin in the Linxing area is significant. However, the intrusion of the Zijinshan igneous pluton and associated hydrothermal activities have impacted the sandstone reservoirs. Analyzing various data, such as rock thin sections, cathodoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, vitrinite reflectance, fluid inclusions, and reservoir physical property, helps clarify the influences of magmatic-hydrothermal activity on reservoir porosity and permeability characteristics.

Late Paleozoic provenance shift in the east-central Ordos Basin: Implications for the tectonic evolution of the north China Craton

Rong Chen et al.

Summary: Detrital minerals in Late Paleozoic sandstones of the Ordos Basin in North China record provenance shifts and transport processes, with significant implications for basin genesis and tectonics. The integration of detrital zircon U-Pb dating, Lu-Hf isotopic analyses, heavy mineral quantification, and paleocurrent analysis reveals two provenance shifts, suggesting changes in sediment sources and tectonic events during the early-middle Permian and late Carboniferous to late Permian periods. The varying Lu-Hf isotopic compositions of detrital zircons indicate different magma sources and ancient crustal components, while the enriched Hf isotopic signatures suggest contributions from the Yinshan orogenic belt and the southern margin of the North China Craton. The provenance shifts may have been triggered by uplift events in these tectonic zones.

In situ stress measurement and analysis of the stress accumulation levels in coal mines in the northern Ordos Basin, China

Donghui Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the main stress regimes and Kaiser effect at two coal mines in the northern Ordos Basin in China, finding that horizontal stresses play a leading role and stress levels increase with depth. The stress distributions vary between the mines, with slightly larger stress accumulation levels in Baode Mine compared to Burtai Mine.
