Point-of-care urine Gram stain led to narrower-spectrum antimicrobial selection for febrile urinary tract infection in adolescents and adults

Tomohiro Taniguchi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether point-of-care Gram stain (PCGS) of urine contributed to the diagnosis and treatment of febrile urinary tract infections (fUTIs) in adults. The results showed a high correlation between PCGS and urinalysis (UA) for pyuria and bacteriuria, and a moderate correlation with urine cultures (UCs) for bacterial types. PCGS led to a more precise diagnosis of fUTI and prompted clinicians to select narrower-spectrum antibiotics with higher susceptibility.
