Effects of 2′,4′-Dihydroxy-6′-methoxy-3′,5′-dimethylchalcone from Syzygium nervosum Seeds on Antiproliferative, DNA Damage, Cell Cycle Arrest, and Apoptosis in Human Cervical Cancer Cell Lines

Kraikrit Utama et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of the natural product 2',4'-Dihydroxy-6'-methoxy-3',5'-dimethylchalcone (DMC) derived from Syzygium nervosum A. Cunn. ex DC. on various cancer cell lines, particularly cervical cancer. DMC displayed significant antiproliferative activity in different cervical cancer cell lines and induced DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. The findings suggest that DMC has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic agent for antiproliferative cervical cancer treatment.

Combination Effects of Polyphenols Present in Sugarcane on Proliferation in MCF-7 Human Breast Cancer Cells

Yujiao Yang et al.

Summary: Sugarcane is rich in polyphenols, including quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, tricin, and p-coumaric acid, which have shown inhibitory effects against MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The combination of luteolin and p-coumaric acid exhibited synergistic effects at all tested concentrations, while luteolin combined with apigenin showed synergistic effects at high inhibition rates. synergistic relation among polyphenols present in sugarcane in inhibition of cancer cell growth.

Phytochemical constituents and in vitro anticancer screening of isolated compounds from Eriocephalus africanus‡

Judie Magura et al.

Summary: The study isolated hesperidin, luteolin, and apigenin from the methanolic extract of Eriocephalus africanus for the first time and found that these flavonoids exhibited dose-dependent cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines. Hesperidin and luteolin were more effective against MCF-7 cells, while apigenin showed the highest cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cells. This suggests that E. africanus could be a potential source of natural anticancer agents for the development of new therapeutics.

Plant derived coumestrol phytochemical targets human skin carcinoma cells by inducing mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, inhibition of cell migration and invasion and modulation of m-TOR/PI3K/AKT signalling pathway

Weiwei Kuang et al.

Summary: The study found that the phytoestrogen coumestrol has significant toxicity against human skin cancer cells, inducing cell cytotoxicity through apoptosis stimulation. Coumestrol also inhibits cell migration and invasion in skin cancer cells while blocking the m-TOR/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Quercetin Induces Anticancer Activity by Upregulating Pro-NAG-1/GDF15 in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer Cells

Yukyung Hong et al.

Summary: The study suggests that pro-NAG-1 could be a useful biomarker for thyroid cancer and quercetin might be a potential therapeutic target for treating thyroid cancer. The findings indicate that quercetin induced apoptosis by selectively inducing pro-NAG-1 expression, and not mature NAG-1, in thyroid cancer cells. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of identifying novel biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.
