Balance of antiperitoneal adhesion, hemostasis, and operability of compressed bilayer ultrapure alginate sponges

Arvind K. Singh Chandel et al.

Summary: Both effective antiperitoneal adhesion barriers and hemostats are necessary in surgery. This study evaluated the effect of compression on the performance of alginate bilayer sponges. Results showed that the 100 μm compressed sponge had the highest hemostatic activity, while the 200 μm compressed sponge demonstrated the highest antiadhesion efficacy.

Synthesis, characterization and rheological study of Arabic gum-grafted-poly (methacrylic acid) hydrogels

Ibrahim Sani Mamman et al.

Summary: Hydrogel synthesis from both synthetic and natural polymers offers advantages in mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and degradation. The grafted hydrogel of Arabic gum and methacrylic acid showed non-toxic and biocompatible properties, with performance influenced by variables like initiator, monomer, and cross-linking agent concentrations. The findings suggest potential applications in agriculture, biomedical, and pharmaceutical fields.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Carboxymethylcellulose/polyacrylic acid/starch-modified Fe3O4 interpenetrating magnetic nanocomposite hydrogel beads as pH-sensitive carrier for oral anticancer drug delivery system

Reza Mohammadi et al.

Summary: Novel interpenetrating magnetic nanocomposite hydrogel beads were designed as carriers for oral therapy of colon cancer. The prepared carrier can potentially prevent drug release in the stomach acidic environment and enhance drug dosing stability in the colorectal area. In-vitro studies demonstrated significant cytotoxicity of the drug-loaded nanocomposites towards human colon cancer cells.

γ-Radiation induced L-glutamic acid grafted highly porous, pH-responsive chitosan hydrogel beads: A smart and biocompatible vehicle for controlled anti-cancer drug delivery

Safiya Nisar et al.

Summary: In this work, highly porous, pH-responsive, and biocompatible chitosan-based hydrogel beads were prepared through gamma-irradiated graft copolymerization technique using L-glutamic acid as the monomer. These hydrogel beads, loaded with the anti-cancer drug Doxorubicin, showed promising potential as a drug delivery system for cancer therapy, with optimal swelling and drug release observed at pH 5.8. The cytocompatibility and cytotoxicity of the beads were confirmed through MTT assay and cell proliferation studies.
