Nanoparticles with rough surface improve the therapeutic effect of photothermal immunotherapy against melanoma

Jiao Xue et al.

Summary: Photothermal therapy combined with immunotherapy has shown promising potential in treating cancer. In this study, silica-based core-shell nanoparticles were engineered to deliver a photothermal agent and a BRD4 inhibitor for tumor elimination. The surface roughness of the nanoparticles was increased to enhance internalization and improve the therapeutic effect. Animal studies demonstrated that these multifunctional nanoparticles effectively eradicated melanoma, activated tumor-specific immune responses, and prevented metastasis and recurrence. This innovative approach holds great promise for combined cancer therapy.

Factors influencing the drug release from calcium phosphate cements

Marco Fosca et al.

Summary: This review systematically compiles studies on the controlled release of drugs from calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) in the past 25 years. The chemical, compositional, and microstructural characteristics of these systems that affect the release rates and mechanisms are discussed. Additionally, the kinetic specifics of in vivo drug release from CPCs are reviewed.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
