Machine learning applications to differentiate comorbid functional seizures and epilepsy from pure functional seizures

Ali A. Asadi-Pooya et al.

Summary: This study developed the best algorithm using machine learning methods to differentiate comorbid functional seizures and pure functional seizures, with the TabNet classifier performing the best. The results suggest that the algorithm could be useful in clinical practice, particularly in distinguishing patients with FS and those with comorbid epilepsy.

Evaluation of thermal sensitivity is of potential clinical utility for the predictive, preventive, and personalized approach advancing metabolic syndrome management

Sujeong Mun et al.

Summary: There may be a possible association between metabolic disorders and ambient temperature, and individuals with altered thermal sensitivity may be predisposed to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Evaluating thermal sensitivity could help identify individuals at high risk for MetS and lead to personalized treatment strategies.

Tabular data: Deep learning is not all you need

Ravid Shwartz-Ziv et al.

Summary: The study compares the performance of deep learning models and XGBoost on various datasets, finding that XGBoost outperforms deep models and requires less tuning. However, an ensemble of deep models and XGBoost performs better on these datasets than XGBoost alone.

Rapid triage for ischemic stroke: a machine learning-driven approach in the context of predictive, preventive and personalised medicine

Yulu Zheng et al.

Summary: In the context of PPPM/3PM, predictors from common blood tests were used to develop and validate ML-based models for the diagnosis of IS. The XGBoost model showed the highest predictive performance, offering a simple and quick prediction tool that can support subjective decision making in resource-limited settings, shorten the treatment time window for IS, and improve outcomes.

Detection of signs of disease in external photographs of the eyes via deep learning

Boris Babenko et al.

Summary: Deep-learning models trained on external eye photographs can accurately detect diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, and poor blood glucose control. These models outperform logistic regression models relying on demographic and medical history data. They can be generalized to patients with dilated pupils, patients from different screening programs, and general eye care programs.

Ophthalmic Surgeries and Systemic Medical Conditions Associated With the Development of Involutional Ptosis

Liza M. Cohen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the associations between systemic medical conditions, types of ocular surgery, and the development of aponeurotic ptosis. The significant risk factors for developing ptosis were ocular surgery, hyperthyroidism, and type II diabetes, with strabismus, cornea, and glaucoma surgeries showing a higher association with ptosis development.

Summary: The study revealed a lower prevalence of DES in patients with radiographic knee osteoarthritis and a higher risk of DES in those with knee pain or stiffness. DES was not significantly associated with radiographic severity in symptomatic osteoarthritis patients, while DES showed an inverse relationship with radiographic severity in patients with nonsymptomatic radiographic osteoarthritis.

How biomarker patterns can be utilized to identify individuals with a high disease burden: a bioinformatics approach towards predictive, preventive, and personalized (3P) medicine

Nina Bertele et al.

Summary: The study used k-mean cluster analytics to identify biochemical clusters and their link to diseases in US and Japanese samples. It found a high-risk cluster with high inflammatory signaling and low cortisol and creatinine concentrations, which also reported the highest childhood maltreatment exposure. These clusters may have predictive character and childhood maltreatment could be a leverage point for disease prevention/intervention.

Caution, normal BMI: health risks associated with potentially masked individual underweight-EPMA Position Paper 2021

Olga Golubnitschaja et al.

Summary: The basic principle of personalised medicine is that one size does not fit all, so the optimal body weight should be determined based on individual genetic predisposition, geographic origin, cultural and nutritional habits, and relevant lifestyle parameters. Both overweight and underweight are acknowledged risk factors for a shifted metabolism, which needs to be optimized. Developing innovative screening programs and applying health risks assessment are crucial for promoting population health.
