Contouring cardiac substructures on average intensity projection 4D-CT for lung cancer radiotherapy: A proposal of a heart valve contouring atlas

Joanna Socha et al.

Summary: This study developed a contouring atlas of the heart valves and assessed inter-observer variation in delineation of the heart and its substructures on AVE-4D-CT scans. The results showed poor inter-observer agreement, with significant variation in radiotherapy doses.

Elevated Coronary Artery Calcium Quantified by a Validated Deep Learning Model From Lung Cancer Radiotherapy Planning Scans Predicts Mortality

Katelyn M. Atkins et al.

Summary: In this study, a deep learning model was used to quantify coronary artery calcium (CAC) from lung cancer radiotherapy planning CT scans, and it was found that elevated CAC was associated with an increased risk of mortality, suggesting a potential benefit for automated cardiac risk screening before cancer therapy begins.

Association of Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Radiation Dose With Major Adverse Cardiac Events and Mortality in Patients With Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Katelyn M. Atkins et al.

Summary: This cohort study explores the impact of radiation doses to cardiac substructures on major adverse cardiac events and mortality in patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer. The findings suggest that dose exposure to the left anterior descending coronary artery may be an independent factor associated with adverse cardiac events and mortality, with significant interaction with baseline coronary heart disease status. Further validation and optimization of risk mitigation strategies are needed.

Learning healthcare systems and rapid learning in radiation oncology: Where are we and where are we going?

Gareth Price et al.

Summary: Learning health systems and rapid-learning are well developed conceptually, but have not yet been implemented in the field of radiotherapy. The connectivity of modern digital healthcare information systems provides an ideal platform for rapidly generating and applying evidence.

Using Auto-Segmentation to Reduce Contouring and Dose Inconsistency in Clinical Trials: The Simulated Impact on RTOG 0617

Maria Thor et al.

Summary: This study applied auto-contouring using deep learning to resegment hearts in the RTOG 0617 dose escalation trial, revealing significantly higher heart doses compared to previous reports. Deep learning technology is likely to reduce contouring and dose inconsistencies, thereby enhancing the quality of clinical radiation therapy trials.

Autosegmentation of cardiac substructures in respiratory-gated, non-contrasted computed tomography images

Mark Farrugia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of autosegmentation of cardiac substructures using 4DCT respiratory-gated non-contrasted imaging. The results showed that while major cardiac structures like great vessels and heart chambers could be reliably autosegmented, small volume structures like coronary arteries, mitral and tricuspid valves required manual definition. Overall, the use of autosegmentation software with a 30-sample subject library was found to be useful in delineating many heart substructures with acceptable clinical accuracy.
