The Effects and Underlying Mechanisms of Hepatitis B Virus X Gene Mutants on the Development of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Rui Pu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the mechanism by which hepatitis B virus X mutations increase the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and identify potential therapeutic targets. The results showed that M3-HBx and Ct-HBx mutants had a higher HCC incidence compared to wild-type HBx. M3-HBx had a stronger capacity to upregulate inflammatory cytokines and promote cell proliferation in HepG2 and HeLa cells. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI1) and cell division cycle 20 (CDC20) were identified as novel effectors, and their expression was significantly upregulated by M3-HBx and Ct-HBx in both cells and mouse livers. Silencing PAI1 attenuated the effects of M3-HBx and Ct-HBx on cell growth. PAI1 could be a promising prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in HBV-related HCC.

Nomograms for Predicting Hepatocellular Carcinoma Recurrence and Overall Postoperative Patient Survival

Lidi Ma et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop nomograms for predicting 5-year overall survival and early recurrence after curative resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and investigate the impact of different treatment methods on patient outcomes. The results showed that the nomograms demonstrated good accuracy in predicting survival and recurrence.

Characterization of hepatitis B virus DNA integration patterns in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma

Mengge Li et al.

Summary: This study revealed that HBV integration is a common event in HBV-related ICC and identified several recurrent HBV integration genes, such as TERT, which provide new clues for further exploring the relationship between HBV infection and ICC.

Compartmentalized evolution of hepatitis B virus contributes differently to the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Summary: The study revealed that HBV evolution is more advanced in the sera than in tumors among HBV-positive HCC patients. The complexity of HBV and specific mutations have contrary prognostic effects in sera and tumors.

Development and validation of a novel online calculator for estimating survival benefit of adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization in patients undergoing surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma

Lei Liang et al.

Summary: This study constructed an online calculator for assessing the survival benefit of adjuvant TACE for patients with resected HCC based on large-scale real-world data. By incorporating existing independent survival predictors, two prediction models were successfully developed and showed good calibration and discrimination.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Epidemiology and risk-stratification of NAFLD-associated HCC

George N. Ioannou

Summary: NAFLD is projected to be the leading cause of hepatocellular carcinoma and is associated with risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, Hispanic ethnicity, and genetic polymorphisms. Lipotoxicity and oxidative DNA damage may lead to hepatocarcinogenesis, especially in the absence of cirrhosis. Validated models to identify high-risk patients for hepatocellular carcinoma in NAFLD are currently unavailable.

Trends in cancer mortality in China from 2004 to 2018: A nationwide longitudinal study

Dongming Jiang et al.

Summary: The study on cancer mortality trends in China from 2004 to 2018 showed a decrease in the overall cancer death rate, but lung and liver cancer remained the leading causes of cancer-related premature death. Furthermore, lung, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers showed an increasing trend in mortality rates among rural residents.
