Changes in mechanical properties of adipose tissue after bariatric surgery driven by extracellular matrix remodelling and neovascularization are associated with metabolic improvements

Xabier Unamuno et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of weight loss achieved through bariatric surgery (BS) and caloric restriction (CR) on the biomechanical properties of adipose tissue (AT). The results show that BS, but not CR, changes the biomechanical properties of AT and is associated with metabolic improvements. Gene expression levels and blood vessel density were found to be altered in AT after BS, which contributed to changes in the tissue's biomechanical properties.

Adipose Tissue Fibrosis in Obesity: Etiology and Challenges

Genevieve Marcelin et al.

Summary: Obesity is a chronic and progressive condition that affects whole-body energy balance and is linked to the development of comorbidities. Fibrotic adipose tissue caused by obesity can lead to metabolic dysfunctions such as insulin resistance. Targeting inflammation or fibrosis deposition may help improve insulin resistance and glucose homeostasis in individuals with obesity.

Distinct properties of adipose stem cell subpopulations determine fat depot-specific characteristics

Hahn Nahmgoong et al.

Summary: This study characterized adipose stem cells (ASCs) in two different types of white adipose tissues (EAT and IAT) and investigated the effects of intrinsic and tissue micro-environmental factors on ASC features. The results showed that ASC subpopulations in EAT and IAT exhibited different molecular features and adipogenic potential. Furthermore, ASCs in these two depots responded differently to obesogenic stimuli, influencing the characteristics of the adipose tissues.

Obesity-Related Adipose Tissue Remodeling in the Light of Extracellular Mitochondria Transfer

Simon Lecoutre et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue dysfunction is closely associated with obesity and its metabolic complications. It has been discovered that adipocytes have a tendency to extrude damaged mitochondria into the extracellular space, which can then be transported through the blood and taken up by other cells. This phenomenon has significant implications in the context of obesity-related adipose tissue dysfunction.

Metabo-reciprocity in cell mechanics: feeling the demands/feeding the demand

Stephanie Torrino et al.

Summary: Altered metabolic programs and corruption of tissue architecture are characteristic of diseases. The spatiotemporal control of cell behavior requires transmitting information from the complex tissue structure to the individual cells, which is achieved through cytoskeletal mechanotransduction. However, this process relies on energy. Recent research has revealed the bidirectional relationship between mechanical forces and metabolic cues, allowing cells to adapt their metabolic needs to their mechanically constrained environment and potentially influencing disease progression.

Multilayered omics reveal sex- and depot-dependent adipose progenitor cell heterogeneity

Bo Shan et al.

Summary: This study used a multilayered omics approach to investigate heterogeneity of adipose progenitor cells, including progenitor subpopulation, sex, and anatomical localization. By using mass spectrometry and RNA-seq, the study identified different protein and gene expression levels in adipose progenitor cells, and discovered sex differences and regulatory pathways. This research provides important insights into adipose tissue plasticity and highlights the complementarity of proteomics in scRNA-seq studies.

Impaired phosphocreatine metabolism in white adipocytes promotes inflammation

Salwan Maqdasy et al.

Summary: This study reveals that an increased phosphocreatine/creatine ratio in white adipocytes contributes to AMP-activated protein kinase activity changes and promotes inflammation in obesity. Metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis of white adipose tissue samples from clinical cohorts and in vitro and in vivo models show that decreased phosphocreatine metabolism alters AMP-activated protein kinase activity by affecting ATP/ADP levels in white adipocytes. This disturbance leads to a pro-inflammatory profile characterized by increased production of chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2). These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms driving white adipose tissue inflammation in obesity.

Intercellular Mitochondria Transfer to Macrophages Regulates White Adipose Tissue Homeostasis and Is Impaired in Obesity

Summary: Recent studies have shown that mitochondria can be transferred between cells to support metabolically compromised cells. This process is regulated by heparan sulfates (HS) and is impaired in obesity, leading to metabolic dysregulation.
