Sarcopenia is not associated with inspiratory muscle strength but with expiratory muscle strength among older adults requiring long-term care/support

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most appropriate parameter for assessing respiratory sarcopenia, and found that MEP may be the best indicator. Measuring MEP is simpler than measuring other respiratory parameters, and can be used for screening respiratory sarcopenia.

Morphofunctional and Molecular Assessment of Nutritional Status in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Systemic Treatment: Role of Inflammasome in Clinical Nutrition

Soraya Leon-Idougourram et al.

Summary: Malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer is associated with worse clinical outcomes. Accurate nutritional assessments can help identify patients at risk of malnutrition early. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with head and neck cancer using a novel morphofunctional assessment, including molecular analysis. The results showed that malnutrition induced changes in gene expression related to inflammation in patients with head and neck cancer, suggesting these molecular markers could potentially be targeted for nutritional treatment.

Sarcopenia, Precardial Adipose Tissue and High Tumor Volume as Outcome Predictors in Surgically Treated Pleural Mesothelioma

Oliver Guido Verhoek et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic value of sarcopenia, low precardial adipose tissue (PAT), and high tumor volume in the outcome of surgically-treated pleural mesothelioma (PM) patients. The results showed that sarcopenia and tumor volume were associated with long-term mortality in these patients, while a correlation with PAT could only be shown for epithelioid PM.

Modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) is correlated with sarcopenia and dominates the prognostic role of baseline body composition parameters in advanced gastric and esophagogastric junction cancer patients undergoing first-line treatment from the phase III EXPAND trial

U. T. Hacker et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the role of the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) in predicting sarcopenia and body composition parameters and its prognostic role in conjunction with these parameters. They found that mGPS was strongly prognostic for overall survival (OS) but did not predict a decline in muscle or adipose tissue parameters. Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status with CRP or mGPS remained the only baseline prognostic factors for OS.

Prospective validation and extension of the Multimodality Prognostic Score for the treatment allocation of pleural mesothelioma patients

Summary: This study aims to validate a previously established Multimodality Prognostic Score (MMPS) and improve patient outcomes by incorporating additional blood parameters. The extended score with albumin showed improved performance compared to the original score and may help in patient allocation to surgery.

The association between skeletal muscle measures and chemotherapy-induced toxicity in non-small cell lung cancer patients

Corine de Jong et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between skeletal muscle measurements and chemotherapy-induced toxicity in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The results showed that patients with low skeletal muscle mass were at a higher risk of severe hematological toxicity and dose-limiting toxicity, while those with high skeletal muscle density had a lower risk of dose-limiting toxicity.

Older cancer patients receiving radiotherapy: a systematic review for the role of sarcopenia in treatment outcomes

Nezahat Muge Catikkas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and its relationship with outcomes in older cancer patients who underwent radiotherapy without chemotherapy. A systematic review of 8 eligible studies found that sarcopenia was not associated with overall survival (OS) or OS at 3 years when defined as low muscle mass (LMM), but it was related when defined as the concomitant presence of LMM and muscle strength/function. Heterogeneity existed among the studies due to variations in inclusion criteria, definitions and assessment methods for sarcopenia, cutoffs for low muscle mass and strength, imaging techniques, and covariates.

RESPIRATORY SARCOPENIA AND SARCOPENIC RESPIRATORY DISABILITY: CONCEPTS, DIAGNOSIS, AND TREATMENT

A. Nagano et al.

Summary: Respiratory sarcopenia is the muscle fiber atrophy and weakness that occurs in respiratory muscles and systemic skeletal muscle with age. Presbypnea is a term for the decline in respiratory function with aging, indicated by a modified Medical Research Council level 1. Rehabilitation nutrition may help prevent and treat respiratory sarcopenia and sarcopenic respiratory disability.

Prognostic significance of radiodensity-based skeletal muscle quantification using preoperative CT in resected non-small cell lung cancer

Eun Young Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that healthy skeletal muscle is associated with a longer 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) in postoperative lung cancer patients, and the proportion of low attenuation muscle is related to DFS. Further research is needed to confirm if radiodensity-based detailed skeletal muscle quantification could predict prognosis in NSCLC.

Biomarkers for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma-A Novel View on Inflammation

Melanie Vogl et al.

Summary: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive disease with limited treatment options and poor prognosis, with asbestos exposure and chronic inflammation as main risk factors. The suppression of the specific immune system and activation of the innate immune system are crucial drivers of MPM aggressiveness, leading to unfavorable patient outcomes. Identifying new biomarkers can help personalize patient therapy, avoid ineffective treatments, and ultimately improve outcomes in this rare disease.
