Contralateral Transmaxillary Approach for Resection of Chondrosarcoma of the Petrous Apex: A Case Report

Jesse D. Lawrence et al.

Summary: The contralateral transmaxillary approach is a novel method for resecting lesions of the petrous apex, allowing for extended dissection. Excellent surgical results achieved by experienced institutions can be replicated in institutions with less experience. Further research is needed to characterize the risks and benefits of this approach.

Septal rhinopharyngeal flap: a novel technique for skull base reconstruction after endoscopic endonasal clivectomies

Juan Antonio Simal-Julian et al.

Summary: Endoscopic endonasal reconstruction techniques have improved CSF leak rates after surgery for cranial base and intradural lesions. In this study, the authors propose a novel reconstruction technique called septal rhinopharyngeal flap (SRF) specifically designed to address wide surgical defects, particularly in the clival region. The SRF, formed by three components of mucosa, provides optimal coverage and has shown positive results in surgeries where it has been used.

Volumetric growth rates of untreated cavernous sinus meningiomas

Carolina Gesteira Benjamin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the volumetric growth rates of untreated cavernous sinus meningiomas (CSMs) and found an estimated growth rate of approximately 23.3% per year, with a volume doubling time of 3.3 years. The study also discovered that 65% of tumors demonstrated growth during the observed period. Tumors were categorized into four groups based on their growth rates: no growth, slow growth, medium growth, and fast growing.

The historical perspective in approaches to the spheno-petro-clival meningiomas

Rafael Martinez-Perez et al.

Summary: The literature on surgical treatment for tumors in the sphenopetroclival region is scarce. Surgical treatment of SPC meningiomas faces the challenge of achieving maximal resection while preserving patient functionality, but recent advancements have improved treatment outcomes. Tailoring the surgical approach based on tumor characteristics, surgical anatomy, and individual patient needs is essential for optimizing tumor resection and patient quality of life.

Endoscopic endonasal approach for suprasellar meningiomas: introduction of a new scoring system to predict extent of resection and assist in case selection with long-term outcome data

Brett E. Youngerman et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors identified preoperative risk factors associated with incomplete resection of suprasellar meningiomas using the endoscopic endonasal approach. A newly proposed resectability score was found to successfully predict the likelihood of gross total resection (GTR). Long-term recurrence rates varied significantly based on the extent of resection, with GTR significantly reducing recurrence compared to near-total resection (NTR) and subtotal resection (STR).
