An update on vitamin D signaling and cancer

Carsten Carlberg et al.

Summary: A low vitamin D status is associated with an increased risk of various cancers. The biologically active form of vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D3, influences the epigenome and transcriptome of healthy and neoplastic cells, affecting their growth and differentiation.

The role of vitamin D in breast cancer risk and progression

Justine Vanhevel et al.

Summary: The active form of vitamin D-3, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-3 (1,25(OH)(2)D-3), plays a key role in regulating calcium and phosphate levels. Low levels of 25(OH)D, a marker for 1,25(OH)(2)D-3, are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (BC) development. However, vitamin D-3 supplementation does not show a significant decrease in BC incidence. 1,25(OH)(2)D-3 or its analogues may have more potential anticancer activity when combined with existing cancer therapies.

Diagnostic Value of VDR in Bone Metastasis and Prognosis of Patients with Breast Cancer and Expression Correlation between Vitamin D Receptor and Hairless Protein

Pan Ding et al.

Summary: The expression of VDR and Hr in breast cancer is closely related to prognosis, bone metastasis, and metastasis-related prognosis. VDR expression is a notable prognostic factor for predicting bone metastases and unfavorable clinical outcome.

International variation in childhood cancer mortality rates from 2001 to 2015: Comparison of trends in the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership countries

Lesley Smith et al.

Summary: Despite significant temporal reductions in cancer mortality rates for all cancers and age groups in the six ICBP countries, the greatest improvements were seen in children aged 0-14 compared to adolescents and adults. This may be attributed to better care and treatment protocols for children.

Anti-tumor effects of vitamin D in glioblastoma: mechanism and therapeutic implications

Carmen Sze-Ching Lo et al.

Summary: Vitamin D demonstrates anti-tumoral activity in glioblastoma by promoting cell death and inhibiting tumor growth, while also reducing cell migration and invasiveness. Upregulation of vitamin D receptors may enhance its anti-tumor effects by its analogs in glioblastoma.

TGF Beta Induces Vitamin D Receptor and Modulates Mitochondrial Activity of Human Pancreatic Cancer Cells

Camilla Fiz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interplay between TGF-beta and vitamin D in human pancreatic cancer cells, revealing that sustained exposure to low doses of TGF-beta results in irreversibly increased epithelial-mesenchymal transition associated with a metabolic modulation favoring metastasis formation.

Vitamin D: Brain and Behavior

Darryl Walter Eyles

Summary: Research over the past 20 years has shown the significant roles of vitamin D in both developing and mature brains, linking its deficiency with neurodevelopmental disorders in infants and certain degenerative conditions in adults. The study outlines the genomic and nongenomic actions of vitamin D in shaping brain development, neurophysiology, and behavior in animal models.
