Near infrared photoimmunotherapy for cancers: A translational perspective

Yasuhiro Maruoka et al.

Summary: Near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT) is a highly-selective cancer treatment using a photoabsorbing dye, currently undergoing global phase III clinical trials and conditionally approved in Japan. In addition to rapid, selective cancer cell death, it also stimulates anti-tumour immunity and may have improved results in combination with immune-checkpoint inhibitors.

MDSC in Mice and Men: Mechanisms of Immunosuppression in Cancer

Christophe Vanhaver et al.

Summary: MDSCs expand during pathological conditions and are associated with poor clinical outcomes in cancer patients. However, studying MDSC immunosuppression is challenging due to their rarity, short lifespan, heterogeneity, poor viability after freezing, and lack of specific markers. While some immunosuppressive mechanisms have been well-documented in mice, direct evidence is still lacking in humans.

Taurine promotes the production of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ Treg cells through regulating IL-35/STAT1 pathway in a mouse allergic rhinitis model

Jing Zhou et al.

Summary: Research has shown that taurine can alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis by modulating T regulatory cells and the cytokine response, promoting the production of more CD4(+)CD25(+)FoxP3(+) Tregs and increasing IL-35 release. Taurine treatment can increase Treg abundance, restore IL-35 release, suppress inflammatory cytokine secretion, and inhibit STAT1 phosphorylation.

Electron Donors Rather Than Reactive Oxygen Species Needed for Therapeutic Photochemical Reaction of Near-Infrared Photoimmunotherapy

Takuya Kato et al.

Summary: NIR-PIT utilizes molecularly targeted antibodies with a photosensitive dye to target cancer cells, causing irreversible damage and highly immunogenic cell death through near-infrared light exposure. The use of L-NaAA can suppress acute edema, accelerate ligand release, and enhance therapeutic effects without causing side effects from unnecessary ROS production.
