Adjuvant radiotherapy may not significantly change outcomes in high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas with clear surgical margins: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Yesul Kim et al.

Summary: There is no significant difference in poor outcomes between surgery alone and surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy for high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients.

Cumulative incidence and disease-specific survival of metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: A nationwide cancer registry study

Selin Tokez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cumulative incidence and disease-specific survival of patients with metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (mcSCC) in the Dutch population and assessed patient-based risk factors. The results showed that approximately 2% of cSCCs metastasize, with higher risk for men, increasing age, and immunocompromised patients. The 5-year disease-specific survival for patients with mcSCC was high.

Epidemiology of advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

C. Dessinioti et al.

Summary: The lack of epidemiological data on locally advanced cSCC highlights the need for standardization in defining and reporting both locally advanced and metastatic cSCC. Metastatic cSCCs, though a small portion, have aggressive characteristics contributing to higher morbidity and mortality, requiring systemic treatments.

Overview of guideline recommendations for the management of high-risk and advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

C. Dessinioti et al.

Summary: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common type of skin cancer, and various guidelines have been issued to guide its management. However, there are still discrepancies among these guidelines, highlighting the need for further research.

Assessment of the Diagnostic Accuracy of Baseline Clinical Examination and Ultrasonographic Imaging for the Detection of Lymph Node Metastasis in Patients With High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck

Selin Tokez et al.

Summary: In this study, baseline ultrasonography was found to be more sensitive than clinical examination alone for detecting lymph node metastasis in patients with high-risk cutaneous SCC of the head and neck. Ultrasonography showed high sensitivity for detecting nodal metastases, especially in patients with negative baseline clinical examination results. However, the high rate of false-positive findings should be taken into consideration.

A Sensitivity Meta-Analysis of Disease-Specific Death in Localized Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Clio Dessinioti et al.

Summary: Patients with immunosuppression are at significantly higher risk of death from cSCC in localized cSCC at initial diagnosis. However, caution is needed in interpreting the results due to limited evidence-based data on DSD in localized cSCC, variability of selected risk factors, and variability in defining risk factors.

Enhanced metastatic risk assessment in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma with the 40-gene expression profile test

Sherrif F. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study validates the prognostic value of the 40-GEP test for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma patients and demonstrates that integrating the test with clinicopathologic risk factor assessment methods can improve risk classification, potentially informing risk-appropriate management strategies for patients.

Adjuvant radiation following clear margin resection of high T-stage cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma halves the risk of local and locoregional recurrence: A dual-center

Emily S. Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of adjuvant radiation therapy on high T-stage cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas following clear margin surgery. Results showed that adjuvant radiation therapy significantly reduced the risk of local recurrence and locoregional recurrence.

Risk factors for metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: Refinement and replication based on 2 nationwide nested case-control studies

Selin Tokez et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and replicated the risk factors for metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) using two different datasets. In addition to diameter and thickness, poor differentiation, invasion, male sex, perineural/lymphovascular invasion, and facial localization were identified as significant risk factors for metastatic cSCC.

Summary: Microscopic residual disease (MRD) after surgery has an impact on the prognosis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), and postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) can improve local control in patients with MRD.

Aimee E. Krausz et al.

Summary: The study reviewed 46 studies on the efficacy of primary and adjuvant/salvage RT for the treatment of cSCC, showing promising results overall, but with higher rates of local recurrence for T3 and T4 tumors. Prospective randomized studies comparing outcomes by tumor stage are needed to guide treatment guidelines.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that adjuvant radiotherapy for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma can reduce recurrence risk, prolong disease-free survival, and improve overall survival. Additionally, postoperative radiotherapy significantly contributes to better overall survival in these patients.

Factors predicting outcomes of patients with high-risk squamous cell carcinoma treated with Mohs micrographic surgery

Andrew Matsumoto et al.

Summary: Research on the long-term outcomes of high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (hrSCC) treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is limited. MMS remains an effective treatment for hrSCC, with factors like perineural invasion, poor differentiation, and immunosuppression associated with poor outcomes. Further study is needed on the effect of adjuvant treatment.
