A novel clinical signature predicts the survival of elderly patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

Wenkai Zhou et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the risk factors for survival in elderly patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and developed a novel clinical signature for prognosis. Results indicated that high N stage, low hemoglobin level, low BMI, and high NLR were associated with poor survival outcomes. The constructed nomogram showed a good predictive ability.

Validation of NRG Oncology's prognostic nomograms for oropharyngeal cancer in the Veterans Affairs database

Summary: The study aimed to validate the nomograms developed by NRG Oncology in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) patients. The results showed that these nomograms were effective in predicting progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), supporting their broader applicability in OPSCC patients undergoing definitive radiotherapy.

The impact of frailty on mortality in non-surgical head and neck cancer treatment: Shifting the clinical paradigm

Leila J. Mady et al.

Summary: This study compared the survival of head and neck cancer patients who received surgical or non-surgical management based on frailty, using the Risk Analysis Index (RAI) as a measure of frailty. The results showed that, regardless of frailty level, patients treated without surgery had worse or similar long-term survival compared to those treated with surgery.

Head and Neck Cancer Complications in the Geriatric Population Based on Hospital Case Volume

Samuel J. Rubin et al.

Summary: The study found that surgical case volume is a predictive factor for surgical outcomes in geriatric patients with head and neck cancer, with higher case volumes associated with higher complication rates. When managing more complex cases, it is beneficial to choose high-volume centers and develop multidisciplinary teams to optimize case management.

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Associations of Polypharmacy and Potentially Inappropriate Medication With Adverse Outcomes in Older Cancer Patients

Li-Ju Chen et al.

Summary: The study found an association between polypharmacy and several adverse outcomes, as well as between PIM use and all-cause mortality in older cancer patients. However, caution is needed in interpreting these results as the majority of studies did not adjust for comorbidity and may be susceptible to confounding by indication.

Summary: The study evaluated the feasibility and safety of a repeated SHort course Accelerated RadiatiON therapy (SHARON) regimen in elderly patients with Head and Neck cancer in the palliative setting. It found that this treatment approach was safe, well-tolerated, and effective in improving symptoms control rate and Quality of Life (QoL) in older adults.

Treatment tolerability and outcomes in elderly patients with head and neck cancer

Daniel R. Dickstein et al.

Summary: The number of elderly patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma continues to rise, yet the management of this population remains unclear. This study found that age and comorbidities were not correlated with treatment toxicity, while treatment interruptions were associated with weight loss and worse overall survival but not disease-specific outcomes. These findings suggest that interruptions in treatment in the elderly may be a symptom of other issues.

Development and validation of a novel prognostic score for elderly head-and-neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy or chemoradiation

Alexander Ruehle et al.

Summary: A novel prognostic score and nomogram were established based on easily accessible clinical data for elderly head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma patients undergoing (chemo)radiotherapy. The score differentiated between different prognostic groups based on reduced performance status, increased comorbidity burden, and elevated CRP levels. The developed tools may assist in decision-making for this vulnerable population.

Summary: This study aims to explore risk-adapted treatment for elderly patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC) according to their pretreatment risk stratification and the degree of comorbidity. By constructing a prognostic nomogram for disease-free survival and dividing patients into different risk groups, it was found that combining risk stratification and the degree of comorbidities can guide risk-adapted treatment for elderly LA-NPC patients and improve prognosis.
