Soluble Urokinase Receptor Levels Are Not Affected by the Systemic Inflammatory Response to Anesthesia and Operative Trauma

Eleni Laou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of general anesthesia and major surgery on perioperative levels of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and C-reactive protein (CRP). The results showed no significant difference in suPAR levels before and after surgery, while CRP levels increased significantly during surgery. There was no correlation between CRP and suPAR levels. In conclusion, despite the activation of systemic inflammatory response, general anesthesia and operative trauma did not affect perioperative suPAR levels.

Sublingual microcirculatory alterations during the immediate and early postoperative period: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Athanasios Chalkias et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examine the alterations of sublingual microcirculatory flow during the immediate and early postoperative period, and their correlation with complications and survival. The results indicate significant changes in sublingual microcirculation after surgery, which may have implications for patient outcomes.

Elevated preoperative suPAR is a strong and independent risk marker for postoperative complications in patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery (SPARSE)

Athanasios Chalkias et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of preoperative soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor as a predictive marker for postoperative complications in white patients undergoing major noncardiac surgery. The results showed that soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor had strong independent predictive value, and could be used to assess the risk of postoperative complications in these patients.

Evaluation of pimobendan effect on sublingual microcirculation in an experimental pharmacology induced hypotension porcine model

Mathieu Magnin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pimobendan on microcirculation and macrocirculation in a pharmacologically-induced hypotension model. The results showed that pimobendan administration improved cardiac function and microcirculation parameters. It increased heart rate, cardiac index, and proportion of perfused vessels, while decreasing systemic vascular resistance index and heterogeneity index.

Association Between Elevated suPAR, a New Biomarker of Inflammation, and Accelerated Aging

Line Jee Hartmann Rasmussen et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated levels of suPAR were associated with accelerated biological aging, older facial appearance, and signs of older brain age. Participants with higher suPAR levels experienced greater decline in physical and cognitive function, while improvements in health habits were linked to less steep increases in suPAR levels.

Intramuscular Exposure to a Lethal Dose of Ricin Toxin Leads to Endothelial Glycocalyx Shedding and Microvascular Flow Abnormality in Mice and Swine

Anita Sapoznikov et al.

Summary: The study found that following intramuscular administration, ricin binds preferentially to the vasculature, leading to coagulopathy and widespread hemorrhages. Damage to the vascular glycocalyx and microcirculation dysfunction play a major role in the pathology of systemic ricin poisoning, suggesting potential targets for specific therapies.

Preoperative Levels of the Soluble Urokinase-Type Plasminogen Activator Receptor as Predictor for New Episodes of Atrial Fibrillation After Vascular Surgery

Milan Lazarevic et al.

Summary: This study investigated the predictive role of preoperative suPAR in postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) occurrence up to 6 months after major vascular surgery. The results showed that suPAR could improve the ability of traditional risk factors to predict AF, particularly in patients undergoing abdominal aneurysm resection.

Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor (suPAR) as a Biomarker of Systemic Chronic Inflammation

Line Jee Hartmann Rasmussen et al.

Summary: Systemic chronic inflammation (SCI) is a persistent low-grade inflammation that plays a major role in aging and disease development. Despite a lack of standard biomarkers, suPAR has emerged as a potential marker for SCI due to its shared properties and characteristics. SuPAR is associated with inflammation, immune activation, and predicts morbidity and mortality across various conditions.
