Anti-Inflammatory Characteristics of Local Anesthetics: Inhibition of TNF-α Secretion of Lipopolysaccharide-Stimulated Leucocytes in Human Blood Samples

Stefan Weinschenk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of four local anesthetics on TNF-alpha secretion in human leucocytes. The results showed that all four local anesthetics reduced TNF-alpha secretion and can be potential candidates for treating overactive immune reactions and chronic inflammation.

Summary: This review discusses the mechanisms, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity, highlighting important determinants of toxicity and patient factors. It also addresses risk mitigation strategies and advancements in the use of local anaesthesia in clinical practice. Future directions for improving the management of local anaesthetic systemic toxicity are also suggested.

Lidocaine for postoperative pain after cardiac surgery: a systematic review

Michael R. Boswell et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigated the effects of lidocaine on postoperative pain scores and recovery after cardiac surgery. Key findings included significantly lower pain scores and fentanyl doses with topical lidocaine, and improvements in pulmonary mechanics with intrapleural lidocaine. Despite some sources of bias, lidocaine infusions were not significantly associated with changes in pain scores or recovery measures. Overall, no significant associations were observed between lidocaine and mortality, hospital stay, or ICU stay.

Summary: Cancer is a major global health issue, with surgery offering potential cure for solid organ tumors, but with frequent postoperative recurrence. The choice of perioperative anesthetic and analgesic agents may influence cancer cell activity, with lidocaine showing potential effects in this regard.

The use of intravenous lidocaine for postoperative pain and recovery: international consensus statement on efficacy and safety

I. Foo et al.

Summary: The use of intravenous lidocaine in peri-operative pain management should be considered carefully due to its potential benefits and risks, especially for patients with comorbidities. Proper approval from hospital medication governance systems and informed consent from patients are crucial before utilizing this 'high-risk' medicine. Dosage recommendations and timing of administration in relation to other local anesthetic interventions should also be strictly followed.
