Discrete twinning dynamics and size-dependent dislocation-to twin transition in body-centred cubic tungsten

Jiangwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten (W) nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. The results show that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These findings reveal a strong competition between twinning and slip in W nanowires, with a transition size of around 40 nm. The insights provided by this work are important for understanding the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.

STEM Characterization of Dislocation Loops in Irradiated FCC Alloys

Pengyuan Xiu et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic methodology for imaging and analyzing dislocation loops in irradiated FCC alloys using STEM was demonstrated. The preferred choice of on-zone [001] STEM imaging was identified based on its accuracy and effectiveness compared to other techniques, and the effect of STEM collection angle on contrast formation of dislocation loops was investigated. The developed STEM-based technique can easily identify different types of dislocation loops in irradiated FCC-based materials and serves as a quick and convenient tool for such analyses.

The measurement of the dislocation density using TEM

Yang Meng et al.

Summary: The line intercept method is a well-developed technique for estimating dislocation density in metals, but its application is limited by the requirement of high-quality TEM images for intersection counting. Manual counting is time-consuming, but automatic counting is possible for dislocations with good contrast and homogeneous background. Imaging conditions were investigated on a slightly deformed IF steel thin foil, revealing that STEM images are more suitable for automatic intersection counting due to their higher visibility of dislocations and homogeneous background.

The impact of alloying on defect-free nanoparticles exhibiting softer but tougher behavior

Anuj Bisht et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of alloying on Ni nanoparticles, revealing that alloying can reduce the ultimate strength of the nanoparticles due to solute-induced local spatial variations of the resolved shear stress leading to premature dislocation nucleation. This counter-intuitive solution-softening effect makes the deformation of the particles require more work, increasing their toughness and presenting alloy nanoparticles as promising candidates for applications.
