Controlling and Focusing In-Plane Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons in α-MoO3 with a Curved Plasmonic Antenna

Zebo Zheng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a versatile technique for launching, controlling, and focusing in-plane HPhPs in alpha-MoO3 using geometrically designed curved gold plasmonic antennas. The manipulation and focusing behaviors at subwavelength scale are found to be strongly dependent on the curvature of the antenna extremity. This strategy operates effectively in a broadband spectral region, providing fundamental insights into light manipulation by biaxial hyperbolic crystals and opening up new opportunities for planar nanophotonic applications.

Tunable Planar Focusing Based on Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons in α-MoO3

Yunpeng Qu et al.

Summary: A tunable planar focusing device operating in the mid-IR region is reported by exploiting highly oriented in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons in alpha-MoO3. The device allows for unprecedented control of the effective focal length of polariton waves through the dimension of the device, the employed light frequency, and engineering of phonon-plasmon hybridization.

Focusing of in-plane hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals crystals with tailored infrared nanoantennas

Javier Martin-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the focusing of in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons on thin slabs of alpha-MoO3 using metallic nanoantennas for efficient launching and focusing, achieving enhanced near-field confinement and absorption. Foci as small as lambda(p)/4.5 = lambda(0)/50 were achieved, laying the foundation for developing planar polariton optics using in-plane anisotropic van der Waals materials.

Planar refraction and lensing of highly confined polaritons in anisotropic media

J. Duan et al.

Summary: The paper investigates refraction between anisotropic media, focusing on the propagation of hyperbolic phonon polaritons through alpha -MoO3 nanoprisms. The study reveals a bending-free refraction effect and sub-diffractional focusing with foci size as small as 1/50 of the light wavelength in free space, showing potential for effective control of energy flow at the nanoscale.
