Removal of Non-Specifically Bound Proteins Using Rayleigh Waves Generated on ST-Quartz Substrates

Mandek Richardson et al.

Summary: This study utilized Rayleigh waves in ST-Quartz devices to efficiently remove non-specific protein binding, improving the performance of label-free biosensors; acoustic streaming prevented reattachment of particles by overcoming adhesive forces at various frequencies; results indicate that ST-Quartz enables integration of functions for removal of non-specific binding, mixing, and sensing on a single chip.

Acoustic trapping based on surface displacement of resonance modes

Bjorn Hammarstrom et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel concept for acoustic trapping of particles and cells, enabling dynamic trapping patterns in a simple and inexpensive setup by using a modified piezoelectric transducer in direct contact with the liquid sample. The system allows for dynamic arraying of levitated trapping sites at low power with potential applications in cell-based sample preparation and cell culture.

Nonlinear dynamics of a solid particle in an acoustically excited viscoelastic fluid. I. Acoustic streaming

Alexander A. Doinikov et al.

Summary: An analytical theory is developed to study acoustic streaming induced by an axisymmetric acoustic wave field around a solid spherical particle in a compressible viscoelastic fluid. The study shows that increasing polymer viscosity decreases streaming velocity magnitude, while increasing the elasticity of the polymer solution leads to an increase in streaming velocity magnitude as long as the relaxation time remains relatively small. Changes in polymer viscosity and relaxation time can alter the pattern of streamlines.

Nonlinear dynamics of a solid particle in an acoustically excited viscoelastic fluid. II. Acoustic radiation force

Alexander A. Doinikov et al.

Summary: An analytical formula is derived for the acoustic radiation force exerted by an axisymmetric acoustic wave on an isotropic solid spherical particle in a compressible viscoelastic fluid, showing that the force can be increased by more than a factor of 10 due to the viscoelastic nature of the fluid. The direction of the force can change depending on the driving frequency, particle size, and relaxation time of the polymer solution.

Fluorescence Detection of miRNA-21 Using Au/Pt Bimetallic Tubular Micromotors Driven by Chemical and Surface Acoustic Wave Forces

Gamze Celik Cogal et al.

Summary: This study focuses on utilizing surface acoustic wave (SAW) systems to enhance the detection limit of the cancer-related biomarker miRNA-21 by immobilizing probe dye-labeled single-stranded DNA on Au/Pt micromotors that recognize the target miRNA-21. The speed and fluorescence intensity changes of the micromotors in response to miRNA-21 concentration variation were studied under both with and without SAW conditions, showing a linear relationship. The resulting fluorescence sensor demonstrated a lower limit of detection of 0.19 nM, which was more than 2 folds lower compared to conditions without SAW, indicating the effectiveness of acoustic removal systems in improving the sensor performance.

Unraveling the Autonomous Motion of Polymer-Based Catalytic Micromotors Under Chemical-Acoustic Hybrid Power

Gamze Celik Cogal et al.

Summary: A hybrid micromotor containing a conjugated polymer and a catalytic structure was developed, with its movement characterized under both chemical power and acoustic power. A theoretical model was used to predict and control the micromotor movement, achieving excellent agreement with experimental results and providing on/off control through design of geometries and acoustic field strengths.
