Summary: In this work, the dispersion of solute in open channel turbulent flow was investigated using Gill's generalized dispersion model, which accounts for dispersivity, skewness, and kurtosis of mean concentration evolution. The study identified three distinct time scales in the dispersion process, including an initial convection-dominated stage, a transient stage with transverse diffusion effects, and an asymptotic stage of normal concentration distribution. The analytical solutions obtained were in good agreement with numerical simulation results using the random displacement method.

Summary: This paper compares the distribution and dispersion of micro-swimmers with and without convective inertial torque in a two-dimensional vertical channel flow, while incorporating other effects such as shear-shape interaction and wall accumulation. The results show the importance of convective inertial torque in the orientational dynamics of micro-swimmers and its impact on their macroscopic transport properties.

Summary: This study directly investigates the gyrotactic trapping mechanism in representative simple shear flows by studying the fundamental Smoluchowski equation, thus bridging the gap between the continuum approach and individual-based models. The influences of varying shear rate and boundary effect are analyzed, and the time-dependent nature of the average swimming orientation with fixed local shear is highlighted. The variations of the characteristic time of the transient thin layer and the consideration of micro-swimmer sedimentation are also discussed.

Summary: We investigate the diffusiophoresis of charged colloidal particles in the presence of nonuniform solute concentration. By comparing theoretical predictions with numerical simulations, we validate the accuracy and feasibility of the theoretical framework. The results also demonstrate that the assumption of constant particle zeta potential is valid for this system under certain circumstances.

Summary: A concentration transport model has been formulated to characterize the transport of self-propelling active particles in unsteady wetland flow at the phase-averaged scale. The distribution of active particles in tidal wetland flow is found to be similar to that in fully developed wetland flow, but with differences in velocity and longitudinal dispersivity, reaching a stable oscillatory status. The effects of dimensionless parameters on the velocity and dispersivity of active particles in tidal wetland flow are discussed in detail.

Summary: An asymptotic analysis was conducted to derive a macrotransport equation for the long-time transport of a chemotactic/diffusiophoretic colloidal species in a uniform circular tube. The macrotransport equation showed excellent agreement with direct numerical solutions of the advection-diffusion equation for the colloidal species transport. By scaling arguments, three regimes of the colloidal species macrotransport were identified, spanning from chemotactic/diffusiophoretic-dominated transport to the hydrodynamic flow-dominated Taylor dispersion regime.

Summary: We examined the active Brownian particle model of a two-dimensional microswimmer with fixed speed and a changing swimming direction according to a Brownian process. The study focused on the swimmer's probability density distribution and its dependence on shape and center of rotation. By neglecting hydrodynamic interactions and analyzing the swimmer in an infinite channel, we derived equations for the invariant density, mean reversal time, and effective longitudinal diffusivity, finding that they are influenced by the swimmer's specific characteristics. Additionally, considering hydrodynamic interactions with walls, we explored the role of shape in the swimmer's dynamics.

Summary: This study presents a semi-analytical solution to predict macroscopic transport in channel-matrix shear flows efficiently, and demonstrates that under appropriate dynamic conditions, the coupled system at the macro scale can be simplified to a one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation, enabling real-time macro-scale concentration estimates.

Summary: This study investigates the transient process of active particles in confined environments, exploring the temporal evolution of local distribution, drift, dispersivity, and skewness based on moments of distributions. It is found that swimming-induced diffusion leads to a faster equilibrium state for the local distribution compared to passive particles, while wall accumulation significantly affects the evolution of the local distribution and drift.

Summary: This study investigates the dispersion of elongated passive Brownian particles in fluid flows, showing that these particles exhibit enhanced longitudinal dispersion in shear flows. The magnitude of the dispersion enhancement is influenced by the particles' aspect ratio and the balance between shear-induced rotational advection and rotational diffusivity. Results are well-captured by a simple theory inspired by Taylor's work, which extends predictions to elongated particles by deriving an effective one-dimensional transport equation.
