Changes in wind energy potential over China using a regional climate model ensemble

Chen Zhuo et al.

Summary: The goal of carbon neutrality opens up a new opportunity for renewable energy development, particularly in wind power. This study evaluates the spatiotemporal characteristics of wind speed and energy potential from different climate models and projects the changes in wind speed and wind power density over China's mainland in the future. The results suggest a decrease in wind speed in most regions of China, but an increase in wind energy potential in the southern parts.

A review of recent studies on wind resource projections under climate change

Christopher Jung et al.

Summary: This review analyzed 75 studies published between 2017 and 2021, investigating the future evolution of wind resources. The studies showed that the availability and distribution of wind resources are likely to change in the future, with the greatest changes observed under the most pessimistic climate change scenarios. It is recommended for future studies to use more realistic climate change scenarios, multi-model ensembles, and longer investigation periods.

Sounding out the repowering potential of wind energy-A scenario-based assessment from Germany

Leonie Grau et al.

Summary: Wind energy in Germany plays a crucial role in increasing the share of renewable energies, but the potential for repowering is limited by geographical restrictions and maintenance considerations. Repowering alone is unlikely to substantially increase the share of wind energy in Germany's energy mix over the next two decades.

Distance to power grids and consideration criteria reduce global wind energy potential the most

Christopher Jung et al.

Summary: This study aims to quantify the reduction of theoretical technical wind energy potential due to geographical barriers and identifies missing infrastructure and consideration criteria as the main limiting factors. In developing countries, the lack of infrastructure significantly affects wind energy potential, while in industrialized countries, consideration criteria play a crucial role in reducing wind energy potential.

A global assessment of extreme wind speeds for wind energy applications

Sara C. Pryor et al.

Summary: This study presents a global investigation of extreme wind speeds using different statistical approaches, providing robust estimates of wind resource for cost-effective expansion of the wind energy industry. The study shows that estimates of U-50 derived from ERA5 output using four different methods are within an average of 9-13% of those from point measurements. The reference wind speed (U-ref) derived from wind turbine design standards is generally a conservative estimate of U-50 and may lead to over-engineering of wind turbines and excess capital expenditures, especially after applying additional safety factors.

Wind energy resource over Europe under CMIP6 future climate projections: What changes from CMIP5 to CMIP6

D. Carvalho et al.

Summary: The future European wind resource is projected to decrease in most areas according to the latest climate scenarios of CMIP6. Only a few localized areas in eastern Ukraine and Turkey may see an increase. There is significant uncertainty in changes in wind resource variability, with some areas projected to have an increase. Unlike CMIP5, CMIP6 forecasts show a stronger decline in wind resource for practically all of Europe by the end of the century, especially in some areas like northern Norway, Poland, and western Ukraine.

Quantifying the sensitivity of european power systems to energy scenarios and climate change projections

H. C. Bloomfield et al.

Summary: Climate change will have a significant impact on future European power systems, especially in the energy balance after 2030. Under different power system scenarios, national power systems may be significantly affected by climate change, particularly in terms of seasonal variations in renewable resources.

A global wind farm potential index to increase energy yields and accessibility

Christopher Jung et al.

Summary: The study aimed to create a globally applicable wind farm potential index to identify productive and accessible wind farm sites around the world. The index was developed using high resolution wind speed models and comprehensive land use data, integrating 16 geographical restrictions including access to power grids.

Exploring backup requirements to complement wind, solar and hydro generation in a highly renewable Spanish power system

P. Tapetado et al.

Summary: A weather-driven model was used to study the requirements for backup generation in a power system with varying penetrations of wind, solar, and hydroelectricity. It was found that flexibility needed for backup generation is higher with increased solar penetration. The model was applied to the Spanish power system, where two dispatch strategies for reservoir hydro and pumped hydro storage were evaluated.
