A new insight into capacity fading of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile composite in carbonate electrolyte

Furong Qin et al.

Summary: Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S/PAN) composite is considered as a promising cathode material for lithium sulfur batteries due to its advantages in cycle performance and carbonate electrolyte compatibility. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics and capacity fading caused by low conductivity remain challenges. In long-term cycle tests, the capacity fading is found to be highly related to increasing resistance and the formation of sulfates or sulfate-like components during repeated cycling processes.

Origin of shuttle-free sulfurized polyacrylonitrile in lithium-sulfur batteries

Chen-Jui Huang et al.

Summary: By utilizing in-situ Raman and in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopies, along with density functional theory calculations, the fundamental reaction mechanism of sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S-cPAN) cathode material in lithium-sulfur batteries is unveiled. The formation of sulfur-nitrogen bonds and their strong interactions during the synthesis process are proposed, providing a new perspective on sulfur chemistry and paving the way for designing high capacity, shuttle-free cathode materials for next-generation Li-S batteries.

Understanding the Roles of the Electrode/Electrolyte Interface for Enabling Stable Li∥Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Batteries

Zhaohui Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the crucial role of LiNO3 additive in preventing LiSx species from dissolving into the electrolyte, thereby reducing shuttle effect and capacity loss. Carbonate electrolyte forms porous dendritic Li morphology on Li anode, while ether-based electrolyte forms dense spherical Li morphology, proving that ether-based electrolyte with LiNO3 is the preferred choice for stable cycling.

Architecting Freestanding Sulfur Cathodes for Superior Room-Temperature Na-S Batteries

Huiling Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, it is demonstrated that a chain-mail catalyst Co@PCNFs can activate sulfur and improve the reaction kinetics in room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries. The freestanding sulfur cathode constructed with Co@PCNFs achieves high reversible capacity and superior rate capability. This is attributed to efficient electron transfer between the polysulfides and Na2S enabled by the Co@PCNFs, enhancing sulfur redox reactions.
