Accuracy and Reliability of Lung Ultrasound to Diagnose Transient Tachypnoea of the Newborn: Evidence from a Meta-analysis and Systematic Review

Hai-Ran Ma et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of lung ultrasound (LUS) for diagnosing transient tachypnoea of the newborn (TTN) by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis. LUS had a high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing TTN. The study supports the routine use of LUS for the detection of TTN.

Increased airway liquid volumes at birth impair cardiorespiratory function in preterm and near-term lambs

Summary: This study reveals the adverse effects of elevated airway liquid volumes at birth on pulmonary blood flow and gas exchange in both preterm and near-term lambs, with the effects being greatest in near-term newborns.

Prone versus Supine Position for Lung Ultrasound in Neonates with Respiratory Distress

Deepak Louis et al.

Summary: This study found that lung ultrasound in prone position is feasible in neonates with respiratory distress. The results showed that LUS scores were higher immediately after a change in position, but returned to baseline levels 1 hour after the change in position.

Comparison of Nasal CPAP versus Bi-level CPAP in Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn: A Randomized Trial

Buse Ozer Bekmez et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of NCPAP and bi-level CPAP in treating TTN, and found that the bi-level CPAP group had lower intubation rate and significantly decreased pCO (2) levels at 12 and 24 hours, showing better treatment outcomes for late preterm and term infants with TTN.

Early term delivery is associated with increased neonatal respiratory morbidity

Ozgul Bulut et al.

Summary: The study found that early term infants are at higher risk for respiratory morbidity compared to full-term infants, particularly respiratory distress syndrome and transient tachypnea of the newborn. It is recommended to reduce elective cesarean sections at the time of first birth to lower the rate of early term births and the associated risk of respiratory morbidity.

Lung ultrasound features predict admission to the neonatal intensive care unit in infants with transient neonatal tachypnoea or respiratory distress syndrome born by caesarean section

Antonio Poerio et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of lung ultrasound in predicting the need for admission to the NICU in infants born by caesarean section. The results showed that the 3P-LUS examination performed 30 minutes after birth is a reliable tool to identify those term and late preterm infants born by CS who will require NICU admission.

Trends and projections of caesarean section rates: global and regional estimates

Ana Pilar Betran et al.

Summary: The global cesarean section rate has been steadily increasing since 1990, with projections showing continued rise by 2030. Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are expected to face a complex scenario involving unmet need, overuse, resource drainage, and avoidable morbidity and mortality. Comprehensive action is needed to address this global priority in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Prospective investigation of serial ultrasound for transient tachypnea of the newborn

Chung-Sing Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a serial and quantitative LUS investigation in late-preterm and term infants with TTN and found that the LUS score relatively well mirrored the respiratory status and could help monitor the clinical course of TTN, whether in resolution or deterioration.

The neonatal respiratory morbidity associated with early term caesarean section - an emerging pandemic

Jis Thomas et al.

Summary: Elective caesarean section before full term gestation carries a significant risk of respiratory morbidity in infants, including the need for oxygen support, respiratory distress syndrome and/or transient tachypnea of newborn, and neonatal intensive care unit admission. Obstetricians should carefully consider the risks of early term caesarean section, especially in women with multiple previous caesarean sections, to balance the benefits of early delivery with the potential risks to neonatal health.

Summary: The study revealed that in treating transient tachypnea of the newborn, using CPAP compared to NC resulted in significantly lower maximum FiO(2) levels in the CPAP group, with a 32% reduction in hours on oxygen.

Increased end-expiratory pressures improve lung function in near-term newborn rabbits with elevated airway liquid volume at birth

Erin McGillick et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of providing respiratory support with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on lung function in newborn rabbit kittens with elevated airway liquid volumes at birth. Results showed that starting ventilation with PEEP of 8 cmH2O mitigated the adverse effects of elevated liquid volumes, improving lung compliance, functional residual capacity, and distribution of lung aeration, yet did not normalize aeration of the distal airways.

Is there a Role for Antenatal Corticosteroids in Term Infants before Elective Cesarean Section?

Summary: This study compared neonatal outcomes in infants born through elective CS exposed to ACS and not exposed to ACS, finding a slightly higher risk of RDS, TTN, and NICU admission in the ACS exposed group, but after adjusting for gestational age and hypertension, these risks decreased.

Fluid restriction in the management of transient tachypnea of the newborn

Neeraj Gupta et al.

Summary: TTN is caused by delayed clearance of lung fluid at birth, and restricting fluid intake in the first days of life may help improve symptoms. Limited evidence exists on the effectiveness and safety of fluid restriction in managing TTN.
