Enhancement of strength-ductility synergy in ultrafine-grained Cu-Zn alloy prepared by ECAP and subsequent annealing

Jianqing Chen et al.

Summary: A homogeneously ultrafine-grained (UFG) Cu-38 Zn alloy with an average grain size of 0.64 μm was successfully fabricated by equal channel angular processing (ECAP), exhibiting a significantly enhanced strength-ductility synergy. The observed strength enhancement can be attributed to grain refinement and dislocation strengthening. After annealing, the alloy showed further improved strength with almost unchanged ductility, which is associated with solute/impurity segregation and precipitation phenomena inside the grains.

Effect of ECAP die angle on the strain homogeneity, microstructural evolution, crystallographic texture and mechanical properties of pure magnesium: numerical simulation and experimental approach

A. Alateyah et al.

Summary: Finite element analysis was used to investigate the deformation behavior of Mg billets processed by ECAP with different channel angles. EBSD analysis revealed a bimodal structure in the 90 degrees-die, while the 120 degrees-die showed fewer areas with fine-grained structure. The ECAP processing resulted in a significant increase in tensile strength, hardness, and ductility.

Through-thickness shear texture of the twin-roll cast AA6016 sheet after asymmetric rolling and its recrystallization behavior

Xianwei Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the through-thickness shear texture and r-cube texture of the AA6016 twin-roll cast sheet under asymmetric rolling (ASR) through simulation and experiments, as well as its recrystallization behaviors after annealing. The results show significant differences in F-texture intensity at different positions on the sample, and there is considerable deviation between simulation and measurement results in terms of the r-cube texture.

On the origin of the Hall?Petch law: A 3D-dislocation dynamics simulation investigation

Maoyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the back stress and associated strain hardening are independent of grain size at low strain, while the grain size effect is controlled by increasing the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) when decreasing grain size. The evolution of the CRSS amplitude is controlled by two competing strengthening mechanisms, justifying the generic 1/d dependent form of the Hall-Petch law observed in simulations and experiments.

Thermal stability of microstructure, mechanical properties, formability parameters and crystallographic texture in an Al-7075 alloy processed by accumulative roll bonding

Omar Alejandro Velazquez-Carrillo et al.

Summary: Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is an SPD technique widely used to enhance mechanical properties in metals, especially precipitation hardened alloys like aluminum 7075. Materials processed by ARB, such as Al-7075, show significant improvements in yield and ultimate strength, with thermal stability of the microstructure being a key consideration for high-strength applications.

Effects of nanostructural hierarchy on the hardness and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: By high-pressure torsion processing, an austenitic stainless steel forms a hierarchical nanostructure with double the hardness value compared to the coarse-grained counterpart, which can be maintained at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. Annealing treatment at temperatures from 400 to 600 degrees Celsius can induce recovery of the hierarchical nanostructure, reducing microstructural heterogeneity and increasing hardness.

Achieving superior combination of yield strength and ductility in Mg-Mn-Al alloys via ultrafine grain structure

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: The addition of manganese in ternary magnesium-based alloys effectively refines grain size, enhances strength, and increases ductility. The presence of ultrafine grains and nanosized precipitates significantly influence the material properties, with recrystallization process being the main mechanism for the formation of ultrafine grains.

Effect of post-deformation annealing on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of an Fe-Ni-Mn steel processed by high-pressure torsion

Hamidreza Koohdar et al.

Summary: Research investigated the effects of high-pressure torsion (HPT) and post deformation annealing (PDA) on an Fe-9.6Ni-7.1Mn (at.%) steel, showing the formation of ultrafine grain martensitic microstructure and introduction of fine and coaxial austenite grains during PDA. The combination of ultimate tensile strength and fracture strain improved significantly after PDA, attributed to finer grain size and the presence of shear-formed austenite. The fracture mode changed from fully ductile to a combination of ductile and brittle nature after HPT, then back to ductile behavior after PDA.

Austenite grain size effect on recovery stress and recovery strain of Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni-0.01C alloy severely plastically deformed by differential speed rolling

S. Choi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that different combinations of recovery stress and recovery strain can be achieved by controlling grain size. The recovery stress and strains are also influenced by the accumulated plastic strain, with higher levels observed when the strain is small due to the training effect, and reduced levels when the strain is large from repeated cycles. Additionally, the higher recovery stress in the HRDSR-processed higher-carbon Fe-SMA compared to the present Fe-SMA is attributed to the smaller grain size caused by the presence of a higher density of carbides.

Developing superplasticity in magnesium alloys with the help of friction stir processing and its variants-A review

Deepika Harwani et al.

Summary: Friction stir processing (FSP) is an established severe plastic deformation technique that can refine microstructures in metallic materials and improve their formability and mechanical properties. It involves dynamic recrystallization during stirring, leading to grain size reduction and texture modification, as well as breaking up intermetallics and precipitates for homogeneous distribution in the matrix. This process has the potential to activate superplastic behavior in magnesium alloys at low temperatures and high strain rates.

Effects of annealing temperature on microstructure and mechanical behavior of conventionally and severely deformed Fe-24Ni steel by accumulative roll bonding

M. Howeyze et al.

Summary: The effects of annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of conventionally and severely deformed Fe-24Ni martensitic steel processed by ARB were investigated. Higher annealing temperature led to complete reverse martensitic transformation and improved elongation in deformed samples. Annealing also improved work hardenability of the deformed samples, while decreasing yield strength and ultimate tensile strength.

A texture study of nanostructured Al-Cu multi-layered composite manufactured via the accumulative roll bonding (ARB)

Vahid Yousefi Mehr et al.

Summary: The study found that during accumulative roll bonding, the texture of Al-Cu multilayered composite was primarily formed by the Brass and Copper components, resulting in a strong beta-fiber, which decreased in intensity in later ARB cycles. The increased misorientation between grains at high ARB cycles confirmed the formation of high angle grain boundaries.
