Aluminum and hydrogen partitioning between bridgmanite and high-pressure hydrous phases: Implications for water storage in the lower mantle

Takayuki Ishii et al.

Summary: This study clarified the phase relations and partitioning behavior of aluminum and hydrogen in the MgSiO3-Al2O3-H2O system under lower-mantle conditions. The presence of hydrous phases significantly affected the phase transitions in hydrated slabs descending into the lower mantle. The results suggest that hydrous phases, rather than bridgmanite, serve as the major carriers of water in the lower mantle.

High thermal conductivity of stishovite promotes rapid warming of a sinking slab in Earth's mantle

Wen-Pin Hsieh et al.

Summary: Thermal transport in subducted slabs and mantle is crucial for their thermo-chemical evolution and dynamics. This study investigates the high-pressure thermal conductivities of stishovite and new-hexagonal-aluminous (NAL) phase, and their impacts on slab dynamics. The findings suggest that subducted crustal materials, especially those with local silica-enrichment, have efficient thermal conduction, leading to faster warming of the sinking slab and altering its dynamic stability.

High-pressure thermal conductivity and compressional velocity of NaCl in B1 and B2 phase

Wen-Pin Hsieh

Summary: The study on the thermal conductivity and compressional velocity of sodium chloride at high pressure conditions provides valuable insights into its physical properties. Additionally, the linear relationship between density and compressional velocity further supports the applicability of Birch's law to sodium chloride within the density range studied.

Dry metastable olivine and slab deformation in a wet subducting slab

Takayuki Ishii et al.

Summary: Research suggests that even under wet subducting slab conditions, olivine and wadsleyite exhibit dry transformation kinetics, which could contribute to deep-focus earthquakes and large slab deformation.

Melting of Bridgmanite Under Hydrous Shallow Lower Mantle Conditions

George Amulele et al.

Summary: High pressure and temperature experiments were conducted on oxide mixtures corresponding to bridgmanite stoichiometry under hydrous shallow lower mantle conditions. Melting occurred in all runs, leading to changes in element partitioning between the melt and residual solids. The study suggests that melting under hydrous lower mantle conditions may explain seismic anomalies and the presence of stishovite in the mantle.

In situ high-pressure nuclear magnetic resonance crystallography in one and two dimensions

Thomas Meier et al.

Summary: Recent advances in in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy under extreme conditions have allowed for observations of various physical phenomena previously inaccessible with standard high-pressure experimental probes. High-resolution NMR experiments in diamond anvil cells (DACs) have been developed, achieving spectral resolutions of 1 ppm and below, enabling detailed analysis of high-pressure structures. The method demonstrates wide applicability for research under extreme conditions.
