A 13-year Trajectory-Based Analysis of Convection-Driven Changes in Upper Troposphere Lower Stratosphere Composition Over the United States

Emily N. Tinney et al.

Summary: Moist convection has a significant impact on the distribution and concentration of trace gases in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. It typically increases humidity, reduces ozone concentration, and increases carbon monoxide levels. The effects of convection are more pronounced in tropical environments, particularly on ozone levels.

Future Global Convective Environments in CMIP6 Models

Chiara Lepore et al.

Summary: This study used projections from seven global climate models to explore the global response in variables describing conditions for the development of severe storms. It found that as global temperatures increase, the frequency of favorable convective environments generally increases, with higher latitudes, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, experiencing larger relative changes. The driving mechanism behind these changes is mainly attributed to a strong increase in convective available potential energy.

Hydraulic jump dynamics above supercell thunderstorms

Morgan E. O'Neill et al.

Summary: The above-anvil cirrus plume (AACP) in the strongest supercell thunderstorms is a mixture of ice and water vapor with potential implications for ozone depletion and surface warming. Through simulations, it has been shown that the generation of AACP involves a hydraulic jump downstream from the overshooting top, leading to significant injection of water vapor into the stratosphere.

A 22-Year Evaluation of Convection Reaching the Stratosphere Over the United States

Cameron R. Homeyer et al.

Summary: Stratosphere-reaching moist convection plays a significant role in Earth's dynamics, chemistry, and climate. This study, using 22 years of radar observations in the United States, reveals that tropopause depression overshooting is more episodic and common in cooler months, while lapse-rate tropopause overshooting dominates in the summer. The majority of tropopause depression material does not remain in the stratosphere, whereas most of the lapse-rate tropopause overshoot material does.
