Emotion regulation deficits across the spectrum of self-harm

Rebekah Clapham et al.

Summary: The study found that suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in emerging adulthood share a commonality in emotion regulation deficits. Greater deficits in emotion regulation strategies were significantly associated with higher frequency of NSSI and intensity of suicide ideation. Prevention and intervention efforts should focus on teaching emotion regulation strategies to reduce the risk of self-harm.
