The Effect of Different Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Protocols on Drug Craving and Cognitive Functions in Methamphetamine Addicts

Samira Rezvanian et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on reducing drug craving and increasing cognitive functions in methamphetamine addicts. The results showed that single-session tDCS had no significant effect on drug craving, but it significantly increased cognitive inhibition. These findings support previous studies on the effects of brain stimulation on reducing drug craving in different drug-type settings.

Cue-induced craving and negative emotion disrupt response inhibition in methamphetamine use disorder: Behavioral and fMRI results from a mixed Go/No-Go task

Amirhossein Dakhili et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interaction of drug-related cue-reactivity, negative emotion processing, and response-inhibition in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD). It found that drug and negative-emotional cues can impair response inhibition, with drug cue-reactivity activating dis-inhibitory regions while response-inhibition in negative blocks showing compensatory activity. This suggests that understanding the interactions between drug and negative-emotional cue-reactivity may aid in understanding the mechanisms of MUD.

Co-occurring Mental Disorders in Transitional Aged Youth With Substance Use Disorders - A Narrative Review

Patrick Koeck et al.

Summary: Adolescence and emerging adulthood, known as youth, are vulnerable to substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. These comorbidities have significant impact on the development and course of substance use disorders in transitional-aged youth. However, data on this population is highly inconsistent. Universal screening and treatment guidelines should be aimed for in the future.

The Relationship Between Brain Metabolites Alterations and Neuropsychological Deficits in Patients with Methamphetamine Use Disorder: A Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study

Hamideh Bakhshinezhad et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the relationship between brain metabolite alterations in frontostriatal regions and neuropsychological deficits in patients with methamphetamine use disorder. The findings indicated significant differences in metabolite ratios and poorer performance in neuropsychological tests among methamphetamine users compared to controls. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between regional metabolite alterations, particularly in the ACC, and neuropsychological deficits in methamphetamine users.

Improvement of Impulsivity and Decision Making by Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation of the Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in a Patient with Gambling Disorder

Adriana Salatino et al.

Summary: The study found that applying low doses of tDCS to the DLPFC of patients with GD can improve impulsivity, decision-making, and cognitive functioning, potentially effectively improving gambling behavior. It is recommended to further investigate the effects of this protocol in large groups of patients and carefully evaluate the patient's emotional state.

The transcranial direct current stimulation over prefrontal cortex combined with the cognitive training reduced the cue-induced craving in female individuals with methamphetamine use disorder: A randomized controlled trial

Xiaomin Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that the intervention of tDCS over DLPFC combined with CCAT may have potential benefit in improving treatment outcome in patients with MUD, significantly reducing cue-induced craving. However, the effect on discounting behavior was not significant, and more research is needed to explore the underlying mechanism.

Impulse Inhibition Ability With Methamphetamine Dependents Varies at Different Abstinence Stages

Weijun Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term abstinence is more effective in improving impulse inhibition with methamphetamine dependents, as it can enhance both accuracy and reaction time delay, compared to short-term abstinence. In addition, with the prolongation of abstinence duration, the impulse inhibition ability of methamphetamine dependents improves.

Rinaldo Livio Perri et al.

Summary: The study suggests that tDCS of the DLPFC is a possible treatment for smoking addiction due to its effectiveness in reducing craving. The level of nicotine dependence serves as a moderator of the tDCS effect, showing potential benefits for smokers with no motivation to quit.
