The Curiosity Rover's Exploration of Glen Torridon, Gale Crater, Mars: An Overview of the Campaign and Scientific Results

Kristen A. Bennett et al.

Summary: The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity explored the clay mineral-bearing Glen Torridon region from January 2019 to January 2021, including a short campaign on the Greenheugh pediment. Curiosity roved 5 km in total, collected samples from 11 drill holes, and conducted the first Martian organics detection experiment. The Glen Torridon region hosts abundant phyllosilicates and exhibits a great diversity and abundance of sulfur-bearing organic molecules.

Hydration of a Clay-Rich Unit on Mars, Comparison of Orbital Data to Rover Data

S. Czarnecki et al.

Summary: Glen Torridon in Gale crater on Mars contains clay minerals, as confirmed by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity. This study investigates the relationship between the hydration observed by the Compact Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) and the Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument. The results show that the hydration observed by CRISM corresponds to the hydration measured by DAN.

Bedrock Geochemistry and Alteration History of the Clay-Bearing Glen Torridon Region of Gale Crater, Mars

Erwin Dehouck et al.

Summary: Glen Torridon is a topographic trough on Mars with relatively strong spectral signatures of clay minerals. The Curiosity rover explored the area for over 700 Martian days to understand the geologic context of clay mineral formation and determine the intensity of aqueous alteration. Analysis of the bedrock's major-element geochemistry reveals distinct chemical compositions and mineralogical interpretations. Overall, the alteration in Glen Torridon shows elevated Chemical Index of Alteration values, suggesting the formation of clay minerals through open-system weathering.

Summary: The Glen Torridon stratigraphic sequence marks the transition from a lake to a river setting, with changes in sediment composition and diagenesis. APXS results reveal elemental mobility and localized enrichments or depletions, providing important insights into the evolution and geological history of Mars.

Evidence for Fluctuating Wind in Shaping an Ancient Martian Dune Field: The Stimson Formation at the Greenheugh Pediment, Gale Crater

Steven G. Banham et al.

Summary: Temporal fluctuations of wind can impact the morphology and orientation of aeolian bedforms, leading to variations in aeolian deposits. The study of these deposits can provide valuable information about ancient atmospheric processes on Mars and Earth, including changes in atmospheric circulation, responses to global changes, and differences between ancient and modern processes. The observation of wind fluctuations across different temporal scales in the Stimson formation at Gale crater further enhances our understanding of atmospheric conditions and processes on Mars at a high temporal resolution.

Mars Science Laboratory CheMin Data From the Glen Torridon Region and the Significance of Lake-Groundwater Interactions in Interpreting Mineralogy and Sedimentary History

Michael T. Thorpe et al.

Summary: The Glen Torridon region in Gale crater on Mars exhibits strong clay mineral signatures, which have been confirmed by the CheMin instrument onboard the Curiosity rover. The presence of new phases such as Fe-carbonates and a novel peak at 9.2 angstroms suggests the potential existence of new mineral species on Mars. Co-occurrence of Fe-carbonate and Fe-rich clay minerals supports a conceptual model of a lacustrine groundwater mixing environment in the GT region.

J. F. Bell et al.

Summary: Mastcam-Z is a multispectral, stereoscopic imaging investigation tool on the Perseverance rover for the Mars 2020 mission. It consists of a pair of focusable, 4:1 zoomable cameras that provide detailed color imaging with high resolution. Mastcam-Z will be used for capturing morphology, topography, and geological context, as well as documenting sample extraction and caching locations, supporting sample selection, driving decisions, and other rover operations.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CLAY MINERAL AUTHIGENESIS IN TERRESTRIAL AND MARTIAN LAKES; AN AUSTRALIAN EXAMPLE

Thomas F. Bristow et al.

Summary: The study compared clay mineral authigenesis in lakes from the Western Volcanic District in Australia and in Gale crater on Mars, revealing similarities in the mechanisms and controls of trioctahedral clay mineral formation. The findings suggest that trioctahedral clay minerals are primarily formed in situ by uptake of magnesium and silicon ions from lake waters, with the process influenced by local physico-chemical conditions and lasting for hundreds of years.
