Impact of heat and drought stresses on grain nutrient content in chickpea: Genome-wide marker-trait associations for protein, Fe and Zn

Srinivasan Samineni et al.

Summary: Chickpea is an affordable source of protein and micronutrients for the poor and vegetarian population in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The study found significant associations between seed yield and grain iron and zinc content. Genome-wide association study identified several markers associated with grain iron, zinc, and protein content.

Genomic prediction of preliminary yield trials in chickpea: Effect of functional annotation of SNPs and environment

Yongle Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of using advanced statistical modeling and next-generation sequencing technology to achieve higher genetic gain in chickpea breeding. Through whole genome resequencing data analysis, the researchers identified SNPs associated with grain yield and revealed regions in chickpea genomes that may have undergone selective breeding. Additionally, the study found that introgression from other legume species for disease resistance may unintentionally reduce yield due to linkage drag.

Chickpea Biofortification for Cytokinin Dehydrogenase via Genome Editing to Enhance Abiotic-Biotic Stress Tolerance and Food Security

Rohit Kumar Mahto et al.

Summary: Over two billion people globally suffer from micronutrient malnutrition, with pregnant women and children in developing countries being the most affected. Biofortification using selective breeding and genetic enhancement techniques can mitigate food insecurity. Chickpea, the second most important legume, has economic and nutraceutical properties, but its production is hindered by various biotic and abiotic stresses. Cytokinin dehydrogenase (CKX) has emerged as a popular target for biofortification, as it plays essential roles in plant growth, development, and yield. Manipulation of CKX genes using genome editing tools can improve yield and stress tolerance. This article provides detailed information on the roles of CKX genes in chickpea and discusses the use of CRISPR/Cas9 for engineering CKX genes to enhance traits.

First Report of CRISPR/Cas9 Mediated DNA-Free Editing of 4CL and RVE7 Genes in Chickpea Protoplasts

Sapna Badhan et al.

Summary: The current genome editing system CRISPR/Cas9 has been proven effective in plant applications, with the DNA-free editing showing promise in achieving targeted mutagenesis in chickpea. By selecting drought tolerance-related genes 4CL and RVE7 for editing in chickpea protoplast, this study demonstrated high efficiency in editing the RVE7 gene, providing insights into gene functions under drought stress in chickpea.

Summary: This study utilized chickpea populations from the ICARDA genebank to identify genotypes with high salinity tolerance. Through field and greenhouse experiments, seven potential genotypes from Azerbaijan and Pakistan were identified, along with specific genomic loci associated with salinity tolerance. Utilizing these markers could enhance adaptability of chickpea cultivars in saline soil and facilitate gene incorporation into commercial cultivars.
