Insights to improve the plant nutrient transport by CRISPR/Cas system

Stanislaus Antony Ceasar et al.

Summary: Improving food production to meet the growing world population in a changing climate is crucial. Nutrient deficiency in soils is a major bottleneck for crop production. Understanding nutrient transport mechanisms can enhance crop nutrient use efficiency and promote sustainable agriculture. This review discusses the key nutrient transporters and explores the potential of CRISPR/Cas system for improving nutrient transport in plants. Utilizing CRISPR-based engineering can lead to non-transgenic crops with better nutrient use-efficiency, reducing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers and strengthening food and nutrient security.

Effect of gibberellin-sensitive Rht18 and gibberellin-insensitive Rht-D1b dwarfing genes on vegetative and reproductive growth in bread wheat

Ting Tang et al.

Summary: The study found that although Rht18 and Rht-D1b have almost the same height, Rht18 has longer coleoptiles. There were no differences in time to terminal spikelet and anthesis, and few differences in stem or spike growth between the two genes. Overall, there were no differences detected that could prevent the adoption of Rht18 in wheat breeding to overcome some of the limitations associated with the 'Green Revolution' genes.

The Ghd7 transcription factor represses ARE1 expression to enhance nitrogen utilization and grain yield in rice

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The Ghd7 gene in rice acts as a transcriptional repressor, binding directly to specific binding sites in the promoter and intron of the ARE1 gene to suppress its expression, positively regulating nitrogen utilization. These two genes display inverse oscillation expression patterns between day and night, and have undergone diversifying selection during breeding.
