Glyco-Steroidal Amphiphiles (GSAs) for Membrane Protein Structural Study

Muhammad Ehsan et al.

Summary: Integral membrane proteins present challenges for high resolution structural analysis. Detergents are commonly used to stabilize membrane proteins in solution. We designed a new class of glyco-steroid-based detergents that showed improved efficacy for protein stabilization compared to current standards, including the original glyco-diosgenin detergent. These detergents will likely facilitate the structural determination of challenging membrane proteins.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Equipped with Gas Cluster Ion Beams for Evaluation of the Sputtering Behavior of Various Nanomaterials

Hsun-Yun Chang et al.

Summary: The selection of ion-beam species and parameters for depth profiling is crucial for obtaining accurate depth information without causing sputter damage. While monoatomic ion-beam sources are commonly used for metals and inorganics, they can cause damage to highly oxidized metal oxides and organics. Cluster ion beams have gained popularity for soft materials due to their low damage to organics, but they have low sputter yields for metals and inorganic materials. This study explores gas cluster ion beams (GCIBs) with smaller cluster sizes, which have higher sputter yields for metals and inorganics while maintaining low damage to organics.

Linking in situ charge accumulation to electronic structure in doped SrTiO3 reveals design principles for hydrogen-evolving photocatalysts

Benjamin Moss et al.

Summary: This study reveals the unique properties of La,Rh:SrTiO3 photocatalyst sheets by combining in situ spectroelectrochemical measurements with density functional theory. It demonstrates that the electronic structure reorganization induced by Rh reduction controls the electron lifetime, while La co-doping fixes Rh in the 3+ state to improve the lifetime of photogenerated electrons even at positive potentials. This understanding provides new insights into the design principles for water-splitting devices based on bandgap-engineered metal oxides.

Effect of Mg2+ substitution on the photocatalytic water splitting activity of LaMgxNb1-xO1+3xN2-3x

Jeongsuk Seo et al.

Summary: In this study, LaMgxNb1-xO1+3xN2-3x solid solutions were synthesized to improve the water splitting activity of oxynitrides, where the substitution of Mg2+ enlarged the band gap and decreased the concentration of reduced Nb species, enhancing the photocatalytic H2 evolution activity and achieving simultaneous H2 and O2 production under visible light. This band engineering technique proves to be effective for visible-light-driven overall water splitting over Nb-based oxynitrides, highlighting the need for further refinements in material properties and surface modifications.
