Manipulating metal-oxygen local atomic structures in single-junctional p-Si/WO3 photocathodes for efficient solar hydrogen generation

Wu Zhou et al.

Summary: The deposition of a WO3 thin layer on a p-Si substrate significantly improves the PEC performance of the photoelectrode, leading to increased cathodic photocurrent density and anodic shift in onset potential for water reduction. Variations in oxygen pressures during deposition can modulate the W-O bond covalency and WO6 octahedral structure symmetry, enhancing charge carrier transport and separation. Additionally, manipulation of W-O local atomic structures in the deposited WO3 layer contributes to a significant improvement in PEC performance for solar hydrogen generation.

Activating the MoS2 Basal Plane toward Enhanced Solar Hydrogen Generation via in Situ Photoelectrochemical Control

Wei Xun et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy to activate the MoS2 basal plane to enhance its water splitting catalytic activity and achieve efficient hydrogen evolution reaction in photo-electrochemical water splitting devices. The emergence of O-Mo-S sites on the MoS2 basal planes is found to modulate its adsorption behavior and improve intrinsic conductivity, leading to enhanced HER activity. The MoS2-decorated Si photocathodes show promising efficiency under simulated AM1.5G illumination, offering a potential scalable route for high-performance and precious metal-free solar-to-fuel devices.

Functional Integration of Catalysts with Si Nanowire Photocathodes for Efficient Utilization of Photogenerated Charge Carriers

Sung Yul Lim et al.

Summary: Low-cost catalysts with high activity and durability are essential for efficient large-scale energy conversion in photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) systems. The spatial control of catalysts on photoelectrodes is crucial for efficient utilization of photogenerated charge carriers. Spatial decoupling of light-absorbing and catalytic components in hierarchically structured Si-based photocathodes enhances photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance.

Development of a bi-compound heterogeneous cocatalyst modified p-Si photocathode for boosting the photoelectrochemical water splitting performance†

Zhiwei Chen et al.

Summary: A MoS2/Rh-P bi-compound heterogeneous cocatalyst was developed to enhance the PEC water splitting performance of a p-Si photocathode, exhibiting improved hydrogen evolution activity and optimized interface energy via synergistic electronic effects. The TiO2 layer acted as a linker to promote photocarrier transfer process. The prepared p-Si-TiO2-MoS2/Rh-P photocathode demonstrated excellent PEC performance with high photocurrent density and positive onset potential, providing a feasible strategy for boosting PEC hydrogen evolution.
