Trilled /r/ is associated with roughness, linking sound and touch across spoken languages

Summary: Cross-modal integration between sound and texture is important for perception and action. A new study shows that this integration also affects the structure of spoken languages. The researchers found that words expressing roughness are highly likely to have the trilled /r/ sound, which is the most commonly occurring rhotic consonant in many languages. This pattern of iconicity is widespread across diverse languages and even within sensory words in languages. The historical stability of this pattern can be traced back at least 6000 years.

Investigating diachronic trends in phonological inventories using BDPROTO

Summary: The expanded version of bdproto database contains phonological inventory data from 257 ancient and reconstructed languages, aimed at supporting language scientists in researching language change and evolution. The study identified a temporal bias complicating the comparison between ancient and reconstructed languages with modern languages. By directly targeting rates of change within and across language families, the research investigated differences in the rates of change of consonantal and vocalic systems over the last 10,000 years.
