Trilled /r/ is associated with roughness, linking sound and touch across spoken languages

Bodo Winter et al.

Summary: Cross-modal integration between sound and texture is important for perception and action. A new study shows that this integration also affects the structure of spoken languages. The researchers found that words expressing roughness are highly likely to have the trilled /r/ sound, which is the most commonly occurring rhotic consonant in many languages. This pattern of iconicity is widespread across diverse languages and even within sensory words in languages. The historical stability of this pattern can be traced back at least 6000 years.

Linking norms, ratings, and relations of words and concepts across multiple language varieties

Summary: Researchers have found that psychologists and linguists have collected a vast amount of data on word and concept properties, and have attempted to combine information from both fields to establish the NoRaRe database. This database integrates data from 98 data sets in psychology and linguistics, covering 65 unique properties for 40 languages, and is managed through different workflows.

Investigating diachronic trends in phonological inventories using BDPROTO

Steven Moran et al.

Summary: The expanded version of bdproto database contains phonological inventory data from 257 ancient and reconstructed languages, aimed at supporting language scientists in researching language change and evolution. The study identified a temporal bias complicating the comparison between ancient and reconstructed languages with modern languages. By directly targeting rates of change within and across language families, the research investigated differences in the rates of change of consonantal and vocalic systems over the last 10,000 years.

Toward a Sustainable Handling of Interlinear-Glossed Text in Language Documentation

Johann-Mattis List et al.

Summary: Although the amount of digitally available data on the world's languages is increasing, only a small proportion of language resources produced are sustainable, making data reuse difficult. A framework for the computer-assisted, sustainable handling of interlinear-glossed text resources has been proposed to address this issue.

Phylogenetic Typology

Gerhard Jaeger et al.

Summary: This novel method estimates the frequency distribution of linguistic variables while controlling for statistical non-independence due to shared ancestry by using all available data and controlling for different degrees of relatedness. The approach involves inferring phylogenies from lexical data, estimating transition rates between parameter states using these phylogenies in a statistical model, and computing the long-term equilibrium of the resulting Markov process. As a case study, the method investigates potential word-order correlations across languages worldwide.

Speech adapts to differences in dentition within and across populations

Caleb Everett et al.

Summary: The study examined the hypothesis that a specific anatomical feature causes languages to rely more heavily on labiodental consonants, and found that labiodentals are less frequent in hunter gatherer populations compared to those that consume softer diets and use eating utensils. The findings suggest that speech adapts to anatomical differences within and among populations.

Exploring correlations in genetic and cultural variation across language families in northeast Asia

Hiromi Matsumae et al.

Summary: The study found that grammatical structure correlates with population history (genetic history) and suggests relationships that arose before the formation of current families. The results indicate that grammar might be a cultural indicator of population history while also demonstrating differences among cultural and genetic relationships that highlight the complex nature of human history.

Contact-tracing in cultural evolution: a Bayesian mixture model to detect geographic areas of language contact

Peter Ranacher et al.

Summary: When speakers of different languages interact, they can influence each other and leave traces in the linguistic record. Factors such as inheritance and universal preference can also contribute to language similarities. A new algorithm, sBayes, has been developed to detect geographical contact areas in language data while accounting for inheritance and universal preference effects.

Wine Experts' Recognition of Wine Odors Is Not Verbally Mediated

Ilja Croijmans et al.

Summary: Experts have better memory for items within their domain of expertise, not necessarily due to more efficient use of language. The study focused on odor recognition memory in wine experts and found that their memory advantage for wine odors is not verbally mediated, indicating language does not play a causal role in recognition memory for odors once expertise has been acquired.
