Advancing Chemical Separations: Unraveling the Structure and Dynamics of Phase Splitting in Liquid-Liquid Extraction

D. Sheyfer et al.

Summary: This study explores the applicability of critical phenomena theory in understanding the phase behavior of liquid-liquid extraction. The results show that different samples exhibit remarkably similar critical behavior, indicating that the phase transitions in liquid-liquid extraction rely on fewer variables than assumed. The extractant plays a key role in the separation process, while other solution components and their concentrations only affect the critical temperature but not the nature of the critical fluctuations.

de Gennes Narrowing and Relationship between Structure and Dynamics in Self-Organized Ion-Beam Nanopatterning

Peco Myint et al.

Summary: In investigating the self-organized ion-beam nanopatterning of silicon using coherent x-ray scattering, a relationship similar to de Gennes narrowing is discovered. However, unlike the classic phenomenon, the dynamic surface exhibits a wide range of behaviors with compressed exponential relaxation at lengths corresponding to the dominant structural motif. This behavior is attributed to the morphological persistence of the self-organized surface ripple patterns.

20 μs-resolved high-throughput X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy on a 500k pixel detector enabled by data-management workflow

Qingteng Zhang et al.

Summary: The performance of the new 52 kHz frame rate Rigaku XSPA-500k detector for X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) applications was characterized at the Argonne Advanced Photon Source. A workflow system was deployed to handle the large data flow produced by the detector, allowing for rapid data reduction and providing human-in-the-loop feedback to experimenters. The XSPA-500k detector, software, and DM workflow system enable efficient acquisition and reduction of up to approximately 10^9 area-detector data frames per day, facilitating XPCS measurements on samples with weak scattering and fast dynamics.

Kinetics of Network Formation and Heterogeneous Dynamics of an Egg White Gel Revealed by Coherent X-Ray Scattering

Nafisa Begam et al.

Summary: The kinetics and microscopic dynamics of heat-induced gelation in hen egg white gel were studied using x-ray techniques, revealing a reaction-limited aggregation process, fractal structure, and temporal heterogeneity. The results were discussed in the broader context of attractive colloidal gel models.

Characterization and performance evaluation of the XSPA-500k detector using synchrotron radiation

Yasukazu Nakaye et al.

Summary: HPC detectors are widely used in synchrotron facilities and in-house laboratories, offering features such as no readout noise, high dynamic range, and high frame rate. These detectors provide high performance with low detection limits and high sensitivity, with most capable of achieving frame rates over 1000 frames per second.

Use of continuous sample translation to reduce radiation damage for XPCS studies of protein diffusion

Laurence B. Lurio et al.

Summary: An experimental setup for measuring X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy during continuous sample translation is effective in avoiding sample damage in protein diffusion dynamics studies. By varying the sample translation rate, the damage threshold level can be determined, while still achieving good signal-to-noise ratios down to short delay times. This method shows promise for obtaining sub-microsecond dynamics on protein samples in next-generation synchrotron sources.

Collective Nanoparticle Dynamics Associated with Bridging Network Formation in Model Polymer Nanocomposites

Benjamin M. Yavitt et al.

Summary: This study investigated the collective dynamics of nanoparticles in polymer nanocomposites and found that nanoparticles are interconnected through polymer bridges to form a network-like microstructure at high loadings. The collective relaxation times of nanoparticles are significantly longer than the diffusion limit of isolated nanoparticles and show a rich dependence on observation wavevector and loading. A mode-coupling theory analysis successfully captured the observed dependencies of collective nanoparticle dynamics, with some quantitative deviations for entangled samples. Additionally, an unusual and weak temperature dependence of collective nanoparticle dynamics was identified, contrasting with the mechanical response.

Spatially-resolved nanometer-scale measurement of cartilage extracellular matrix mobility

B. D. Partain et al.

Summary: This study uses X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to evaluate dynamic interactions between intact cartilage and biofluids at the nanometer scale. Results show that cartilage ECM mobility varies with length scale and fluid environment, demonstrating the importance of biosolid-biofluid interactions in dictating ECM dynamics. XPCS can provide unique insights into spatially resolved cartilage ECM mobility.
