A novel approach to determine residual stress field during FSW of AZ91 Mg alloy using combined smoothed particle hydrodynamics/neuro-fuzzy computations and ultrasonic testing

A. R. Eivani et al.

Summary: This study developed a computational workflow based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to evaluate residual stress in the friction stir welding process. The integrated SPH and ANFIS methodology efficiently predicted the residual stress distribution throughout the friction stir welding of AZ91 alloy.

Thermo-Mechanical Simulation of Underwater Friction Stir Welding of Low Carbon Steel

Shabbir Memon et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow of materials and weld formation during underwater friction stir welding of low carbon steel. A thermo-mechanical model is used to understand the relation between frictional heat phenomena during the welding and weld properties. Comparisons between simulation and experimental results with traditional friction stir welding show that the underwater process results in a more refined microstructure and higher ultimate tensile strength in the welded samples.
