Vegetation attributes drive the taxonomic richness and functional composition of beetles and spiders in mountainous urban green spaces

Frederick Gyasi Damptey et al.

Summary: Urban green spaces enhance the quality of life and serve as habitat for organisms. However, human activities limit their ability to provide ecosystem services. We studied the arthropods in a mountainous urban ecosystem in Ghana and found differences in taxonomic richness and activity density between woodlands and built-up areas. Plant diversity and structural complexity were key factors explaining the differences in arthropod communities. The remaining vegetation patches in built-up areas should be protected to support biodiversity.

Saproxylic species are linked to the amount and isolation of dead wood across spatial scales in a beech forest

Summary: The amount of dead wood positively affects beetle richness, but only on small spatial scales for fungi, bryophytes, and lichens; dead wood amount has no effect on larger scales, while isolation decreases species richness.

What is the potential for replacing monocultures with mixed-species stands to enhance ecosystem services in boreal forests in Fennoscandia?

Saija Huuskonen et al.

Summary: Mixed forests in Fennoscandia appear to provide higher levels of ecosystem goods and services compared to monocultures, including increased biodiversity, improved risk management, and multiple-use values. However, browsing by cervids poses a significant challenge, requiring further research on silvicultural practices suited for mixed boreal forests.

Tree phylogenetic diversity structures multitrophic communities

Summary: According to the study, plant phylogenetic diversity has a stronger influence on the community structure of co-occurring organisms across trophic levels, increasing the diversity of predatory arthropods while decreasing herbivorous arthropod diversity.

Influence of land use change on rove beetle diversity: A systematic review and global meta-analysis of a mega-diverse insect group

Summary: The response of rove beetles to different types of land use varies, with density and richness decreasing in crops and pastures while urban zones exhibit diversity similar to some native habitats. The extent of response varies among biogeographic regions and is related to the life history traits of the species in the beetle communities.

Monoculture and mixture-planting of non-native Douglas fir alters species composition, but promotes the diversity of ground beetles in a temperate forest system

Peter Kriegel et al.

Summary: In temperate forests in Germany, pure stands of Douglas fir showed the highest abundance and functional diversity of ground beetles, while tree mixtures had intermediate values. The main drivers of these patterns were only partially dependent on tree species identity, emphasizing the importance of forest stand structures. However, distinct shifts in assemblage structure were observed between pure beech and pure Douglas fir stands, indicating that even in mixtures, planting non-native tree species can modify associated biodiversity.

People plant trees for utility more often than for biodiversity or carbon

Meredith P. Martin et al.

Summary: Tree planting is a promising but controversial solution to climate change and biodiversity loss. The number of tree planting organizations has greatly increased in the past 30 years, particularly for-profit organizations, focusing on agroforestry systems and mixed/single species plantations. Despite efforts to plant more trees, there is a lack of monitoring and transparency, with commercial species being commonly used without much coordination among organizations to avoid biotic homogenization.

Trade-Offs and Synergies Between Food and Fodder Production and Other Ecosystem Services in an Actively Restored Forest, Natural Forest and an Agroforestry System in Ghana

Frederick Gyasi Damptey et al.

Summary: In a study comparing a restoration project in Ghana with a local agroforestry system and natural forest, it was found that actively restored forests showed better performance in certain ecosystem service proxies, but had lower values in terms of food and fuelwood biomass, and carbon storage compared to natural forests.

Influence of management practices on stand biomass, carbon stocks and soil nutrient variability of teak plantations in a dry semi-deciduous forest in Ghana

Jones Agyei Kumi et al.

Summary: This study compared the biomass, carbon stock accumulation, and soil nutrient levels in an intensively managed (IMP) and less intensively managed (LIMP) teak plantation in Ghana. The data showed that IMP significantly accumulated more biomass and carbon stocks than LIMP. However, LIMP had a higher number of forked trees. The results suggest that management practices have a significant effect on the characteristics of the stands and the soils they grow on, highlighting the importance of implementing intensive management practices for optimal plantation benefits.
