Graceful behavior during CMAS corrosion of a high-entropy rare-earth zirconate for thermal barrier coating material

Tian-Zhe Tu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that HEZ ceramics show a graceful behavior to CMAS corrosion, much better than LZ ceramics. HEZ only suffered from dissolution and re-precipitation due to CMAS corrosion, while additional grain boundary corrosion existed in the LZ system. The fine-grained structure of the precipitated high-entropy apatite resulted in a reaction layer without cracks. Therefore, HEZ is a promising candidate for TBCs with extreme resistance to CMAS corrosion.

Mass transfer in polycrystalline ytterbium monosilicate under oxygen potential gradients at high temperatures

Tsuneaki Matsudaira et al.

Summary: Mass transfer in polycrystalline Yb2SiO5 wafers with precise composition control was evaluated through oxygen permeation experiments, finding that oxygen permeation was caused by mutual grain boundary diffusion of oxide ions and Yb ions. By comparing mass transfer parameters, the oxygen shielding properties of Yb2SiO5 were determined to differ from other line compounds.

Preparation and properties of CMAS resistant bixbyite structured high-entropy oxides RE2O3 (RE = Sm, Eu, Er, Lu, Y, and Yb): Promising environmental barrier coating materials for Al2O3f/Al2O3 composites

Yanan Sun et al.

Summary: Y2O3 is considered a potential environmental barrier coating material for Al2O3f/Al2O3 ceramic matrix composites due to its high melting point and similar thermal expansion coefficient to Al2O3. However, its high thermal conductivity and unsatisfactory CMAS resistance are major obstacles. High-entropy oxides RE2O3, such as (Eu0.2Er0.2Lu0.2Y0.2Yb0.2)(2)O-3 and (Sm0.2Er0.2Lu0.2Y0.2Yb0.2)(2)O-3, have been developed to address these issues, showing promising mechanical and thermal properties as well as excellent CMAS resistance.

Summary: High-entropy strategy and defect engineering were used to significantly suppress thermal conductivity and optimize electrical conductivity in SrTiO3-based thermoelectric ceramics. The minimum thermal conductivity in high-entropy TiO3 bulks can be reduced to 1.17 W/(m • K), with a power factor of 295μW/(m • K-2), and a ZT value of 0.2 at 873K.

High-entropy ceramics: Present status, challenges, and a look forward

Huimin Xiang et al.

Summary: High-entropy ceramics are solid solutions of inorganic compounds with diverse crystal and electronic structures, providing large space for property tuning through band structure and phonon engineering. In addition to traditional strengthening, hardening, and low thermal conductivity, HECs exhibit new properties such as colossal dielectric constant and super ionic conductivity. Challenges in processing, characterization, and property predictions are highlighted, along with future directions for material exploration and in-depth characterization.
